Why I love small towns: Potlucks and crazy-sock salutes

Two vignettes from my crazy-busy life this week reminded me why I love living where I live. Our tight-knit but ever-expanding group of friends would do just about anything for each other, and have fun doing it.

Case in point: My best bud and I conspired to throw a together a last-minute Pre-Mardi Gras potluck. (File under the heading: Any Excuse for a Party) However, we were a bit too quick and casual with our planning — which was done by txt — and each thought the other was hosting! Long story short, I found out at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday that I was hosting a party the next evening!

No worries: The 5-year-old and I ran a mop down the middle of the house and stashed some clutter piles in the closet. Hubby cooked up a spicy pot of Creole chicken, and poof! Ready for guests.

King Cake, by Daveed and Ana

I put out a call for comrades on Facebook, and a few short hours later, we had ourselves a festive gathering for 20-some neighbors, with as many kids as adults in attendance. No drama, no fuss, just good times.

One of the many excellent cooks among us even whipped up a fabulous brioche King Cake, which his creative wife decorated with aplomb, even lovingly crafting the “baby” out of a green Twizzler to avoid any choking hazard for the kidlets. That’s just how we think.

Daughter (holding ball) and the Destroyers

Another instance of our community love-fest was witnessed last weekend, at my 7th-grade daughter’s last rec league basketball game before she “ages out” of the program. Her adoring teammates and coach all showed up in their craziest socks — an homage to my daughter’s signature stocking styles. What a sweet surprise! They were all smiles waiting for her at the door to see her reaction. Another happy memory etched in our brains.

It makes me feel both grateful and a little sad when far-flung friends make comments on my many Facebook updates and photos saying they wish they had such a network. I wish everyone could walk down their street and not know a stranger.
