Last-minute treats: Simple snowman cupcakes
No time to bake any special treats for the family yet? No worries. You can whip up a batch of these Snowman Cupcakes with a box of cake mix, a tub of icing and a trip down the candy aisle of your local grocer.
My original inspiration for these wintry wonders came from allyou.com, but when I tried to attach the earmuffs fashioned out of rainbow Twizzlers and gumdrop earmuffs, the dang things just fell off. But Plan B turned out just fine, thank you.
I used a white cake mix, but yellow would work too, if you catch my drift. ;)
The kids and I topped the cooled cakes with vanilla whipped frosting, then dredged each one in a bowl of large-grained sparkling sugar (found in your market’s baking section).
We used peanut butter M&M’s for eyes, but Skittles or plain M&M’s would be great too.
I carved candy orange slices from the Dollar Tree into wee triangles for “carrot” noses.
Little lengths of Cherry Pull-N-Peel Twizzlers were curled into smiles, and my teen son (who really, really likes knives) chopped Strawberry Milkshake Whoppers in half to represent rosy cheeks.
That’s it. Simple, really. And so adorable!
Any kind of candy can be adapted for this, so use your creativity.
This would make a great family activity for a snow day or winter break to keep those bored kids busy. My 5-year-old had a great time making these with me.
Serve with hot chocolate, and the smiles will warm your heart.
