It’s time for the holidays? Already? Humbug.

I’m not sure how it happened so quickly, but tomorrow is December 1.

The holidays are looming.

I’m determined to be organized this year and have everything done early - even opting for Thanksgiving cards instead of Christmas cards.

Sadly, the older I get, the less tolerant I am of the holiday hustle and bustle and the commercialization of what is supposed to be the celebration of a holy birth.

I am not a fan of crowds - especially the pushy kind racing for a limited number of the “hottest toys of the year.”

I’m more thankful each year for online shopping.

My boys started with the “I-want-that’s” weeks ago, right on cue with the start-up of the toy commercials and print ads.

“Tell Santa. He’s watching, but he’s on a budget.” I mumbled while setting out the Halloween decor.

Not only do we have the ever-growing Christmas lists and chores, we have to squeeze in a birthday party, too. Son no. 1’s ETA was Christmas day, but he came a few days early. We like to keep that celebration separate - so does he.

By the time the holiday festivities are over and we are faced with three months (four in Ohio) of bone-chilling weather and cabin fever; I am ready for our home to be free of pine needles, wrapping paper and phone calls from every charitable organization on the planet (just send us something in the mail).

So, imagine my surprise when, while standing in the grocery store recently, I felt a twinge of excitement bubble up when I spotted Pumpkin Spice coffee cream.

“I guess I’m not entirely a scrooge,” I thought while unconsciously swaying to the holiday Muzak.

Pumpkin Spice coffee cream is one of those items you can only find during the holidays. So are snowman shaped chocolates, cinnamon scented pinecones and egg nogg.

Thinking back, my parents always made Christmas time special for me and my brother. I want to do the same for my kids.

It’s also a perfect time to teach them about giving; a great reason to sort-through the play room and donate some no-longer-loved toys.

I’m proud to say (an early Christmas miracle); Nick used the last $5 in his piggy bank to help fill an Operation Christmas Child shoebox with goodies this year.

It will be fun to watch our daughter on her first Christmas - well, not technically her first, but she couldn’t even sit up last year, let alone unwrap a box or topple the Christmas tree (any tips on anchoring a tree indoors?).

Ahhh, the nostalgia; they grow up so fast. But, ready or not, Christmas is coming.
