First day of school a success (I think).
Alarm clock set? Check.
Lunch/snack packed? Check.
Backpacks ready? Check.
The yellow buses are on the roads again and we survived the first morning of the school year without any major meltdowns.
My mom-meter hovered in between tears of joy and tears of nostalgia as I sent Nick off for his final year of preschool and Noah to first grade.
I couldn’t wait to hear about their exciting first days of school.
As soon as they stepped off the bus, I turned into my dad, “How was school today? What did you do? Learn anything?”
Nick came home sporting his (rare) sweet side, “I made something for you and Daddy!”
He dug into his backpack to show me his treasures of art work.
“Wow! What else did you do?”
“I don’t know,” he said.
End of conversation.
Nick then spent the afternoon missing his brother (who he was fighting with just hours ago).
Four hours - and 17 “no-it’s-not-time-yets” later - I went with Nick in tow, to greet Noah.
Of course, being the “embarrassing mom” that I am, I hooted, hollered and applauded as he hopped off the bus.
“Wooohoo! Big first grader! Woohoo!”
Rather than roll his eyes though, he blurted out, “First grade is fun!!”
“Great! What did you do?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Then how do you know it was fun?” I asked.
“Seriously, I don’t remember, but it was fun.”
I proceeded with my questioning, addressing every child’s favorite subject: recess.
“We played boys against girls. None of the girls caught me, but I caught the girls!”
Fantastic. Next question, please.
After some further probing, Noah finally revealed that they had completed some worksheets and read books at school.
“Book time was actually rest time. Everything was rest time, except for recess and Music.”
(Insert sarcasm here) “I’m so glad you were paying attention,” I said.
With no notes or phone calls from the teachers yet, I think it’s better to assume that no news is good news and just stop asking questions.
