Crazy Hair Day: My daughter, the unicorn

My 12-year-old daughter’s annual summer dance camp, Red Hotz and Lollipops , is in full swing again.

To add to the fun, camp organizers plan theme days each year, including Pajama Day, Mismatch Day and Team Spirit Day.

It’s a tradition at our house to come up with the most unusual hairstyle we can concoct for the camp’s Crazy Hair Day. This year, we had a unicorn horn in mind when we crafted her coif.

We used Got2b Spiking Glue in bright yellow and green (purchased in the bargain basket at our local Great Clips salon), a cone fashioned out of a castoff manila folder and duct tape, a piece of ribbon from the junk drawer, and loads and loads of bobby pins.

I sprayed on the finishing pink highlights out on our front stoop for the whole world to see. Wonder what the neighbors thought? Who cares — we had a ball!

Red Hotz is coming up on its 20th anniversary next year, and I hope the tradition continues. My 4-year-old son can’t wait till he can join the Minipops class as a kindergartner. He’s already planning his wacky hairstyle!

I think it’s great to hear about moms who love their kids enough to let them do wild and silly things like this! My son sported a bright purple mohawk for months, and we both loved it - because the conditions of him getting it included making the honor roll. Some parents are so uptight that letting their kids get wild with things now and then is a no-no. I’m betting your daughter will grow up and you’ll be her best friend as well as her mother, as my son and I are. Bravo!
