Just another day at the dentist in the land of Motherhood

Some days, things just don’t work out the way you plan them - especially if you have kids. Being a parent requires a lot of expectation of the unpredictable.

We returned from our spring break trip and jumped into things head first: unpacking, school, work, dental appointments.

I wasn’t thinking clearly when I scheduled the dental appointment for myself and my sons. My husband was working, Memaw was on vacation and the babysitter was in school, when we rolled into the office parking lot that day.

This meant the baby was with us.

I realized too late the stroller was in the back of our other car. My key to grandma’s house was also in that car - no access to her stroller either. So, I herded the boys into the dentist’s office while lugging my 20 lb. daughter in my arms.

I suggested rescheduling my dental cleaning for another day so I could look after the baby, but the office crew wouldn’t hear of it.

“We’ll help you with the babysitting,” they said. “Do you have something she can sit in?”

I left the boys in the care of the hygienist while I yanked a car seat free from the grips of the seatbelt. Naturally, the baby was hungry. She gulped down a bottle in the lobby and I plopped her into the seat.

But, she wasn’t having any of this, she was tired and fussy; somebody - preferably Mommy - was going to have to hold her.

Apparently having done this before, Karen, the hygienist, reclined the dentist chair while Laney sat on my lap.

She wiggled, bounced and tried to grab the tools on the tray.

My arms began to go numb from trying to hold her still while Karen placed sharp objects in my mouth - a new three-ring show in the Motherhood Circus.

Eventually, Laney nodded off.

The boys, now done with their check-ups, paraded around the office chatting up the staff, digging through the prize drawer and occasionally glancing in on me (probably to make sure I was still unable to come after them).

What should have been a fairly brief visit to the dentist ended up being about a 90-minute event.

By the time I had the car seat re-installed and everyone buckled up, I was drained, but able to find the upside to our adventure.

We were all cavity-free, had pearly white teeth and no diaper change was needed.
