Photo of the Week: First day of school

I cry at weddings. I cry at the movies. I cry when I hear the national anthem or “Amazing Grace.” Is it any wonder I’d get a little misty-eyed on the first day of school? I’d be shocked to find a mom who doesn’t.

All over Facebook today, my parent friends were posting cute heading-off-to-school photos of their smartly dressed kids toting crisp new backpacks. Nearly all the comments lamented this season of change. Can we keep them little forever? Only in those pictures.

First day of preschool. First day of kindergarten. Elementary school, junior high, high school. Then the Big One — packing them off to college.

We parents joke about it, saying “FINALLY!” and “It’s about time,” but when we look at those photos, all that longing to hold our little babies again comes rushing back into our hearts. My tear ducts get leaky just thinking about it.

OK, enough sappy crap. Here are a few stills from my 3-year-old’s first day at a new preschool, and daughter’s first day as a newly minted sixth-grader. (Note the crowd in the background: Our community floods the schoolyard on the first day. One of the many reasons I love living here.) My too-cool-for-school eighth-grader escaped early to avoid the cameras. I did get a nice long hug from him, though! :)

To be sure, first days aren’t all teardrops and heartache. My daughter’s Facebook status trumpeted: “Had the best first day of school ever!”

Eight of us hit the ‘like’ button.

Oh, LucyB, you are making me so homesick and also so nostalgic and weepy!!! Yes, why can’t we just keep them little and snuggly forever? We keep thinking about how fast they will be gone from home, off to college, and it makes me just want to squeeze them close. :) Loved the post, girl.
