Precious Preemie: New niece is a miracle

Every baby is a miracle. If you don’t believe me, watch a baby being born: It’ll rock your world.

But, to reference “Animal Farm,” some babies are more miraculous than others.

Case in point: The latest addition to our family, a precious bundle of joy delivered into the arms of Hubby’s niece last weekend.

Medical problems forced an early arrival, so our first grandniece was born at 27 weeks. She weighed just 1 pound, 12 ounces!

We got to visit her in Miami Valley Hospital’s NICU — the best in the area — 2 days after her grand entry into our world.

After scrubbing up to the elbows for 2 minutes (the new dad used an egg timer to help us keep track), Hubby and I tiptoed into her semi-private room and peeked into her cozy little incubator.

O, how tiny she was! The teeny pink toes, the perfectly formed fingernails, the thick layer of blond lanugo. Her diaper was the size of a folded-up tissue! She looked so delicate, but at the same time so vital — stretching her sweet little bird legs and waving her arms (and accompanying tubes and such).

What a sight to behold! Sure, I’ve seen pictures of premature babies, but I’ve never had one squirming around inches in front of my face. Gazing at her brought back wonderful memories of my own pregnancies. Something that astonishing actually grew inside me. Mind-blowing!

I’m telling you, I was awestruck. I thanked God right there on the spot for my three healthy children, and I asked him to keep this baby safe and help her grow stronger every day.

Since then, several of my Facebook friends have shared their preemie’s stories — all with happy endings.

These next few months will be both exciting and scary for the new parents, but they seem very calm and capable. And the Miami Valley staff has assured them that they’ll be well-prepared for what’s ahead.

Please join me in sending good wishes their way.

I, also, was “awestruck” when I was present at the emergency C-Section of my daughter-in-law and the doctor lifted out tiny Vienna weighing 1 lb. 4 oz. She was only 24 weeks in gestation. Her tiny, tiny arms and legs were moving. All the medical professionals were wonderful in keeping my daughter-in-law informed on Vienna’s condition. They took pictures of Vienna and brought them in to us. (Miami Valley) So many friends and family members supported us through prayer and acts of kindness while we took one day at a time and watched her grow one ounce at a time. At one point Vienna weighed 14 3/4 ozs. I remember being awestruck at the knowledge that 24 weeks is legal, partial birth abortion in Ohio. Our precious granddaughter was saved by the doctors because her mother wanted her. Isn’t that sad? The doctors throw these tiny perfect babies away when the mother doesn’t want them. And it is legal. Please don’t support our politician that vote in favor of the Freedom of Choice Act. We are so very very fortunate that Vienna is 9 yrs. old and very healthy. As her grandmother, I am awestruck at the miracle of her birth and her survival.
