“Some of them don’t play well with others”
This week, Madison has been abuzz over the controversy surrounding the Ohio Attorney General’s opinion that it’s a conflict for Todd Farler to serve as both a school board member and township administrator.

On Wednesday I spoke with Farler and board member Brian McGuire about the special board meeting held this week to discuss the opinion - which Farler described as “unprofessional and chaotic” and McGuire said “didn’t get us anywhere.”
But what I found interesting were the men’s comments about board meetings in general.
Farler, who is now in his second term, used the phrase “some of them don’t play well with others” to describe the board.
“The past board knew how to disagree and still get business done,” he said “This board doesn’t know how to disagree.”
McGuire - who said he didn’t know about the opinion from the attorney general until last week - also said he has been perplexed by recent board meetings, and was especially confused by this week’s meeting, where a lawyer was invited to answer questions, but then not approved to speak.
McGuire and Farler said they received e-mails from board President Glenn Cappel informing them the lawyer - who would be unbiased - would be at the meeting. However, it was only Farler and McGuire who voted to allow the lawyer to speak.
“I just don’t like the way our school board seems fractured to me,” McGuire said.
He said it is good for board members to have their own opinions, but “in the end there’s a decision that has to be made and when it’s made, everybody has to support it.”
