School buildings, time waiver and more

Middletown, Edgewood, Franklin and Carlisle school boards will each meet tonight. Here’s a short summary of what’s on tap.

Middletown: The board will consider approving a waiver for Central Academy that would lengthen the school day next year by 30 minutes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday so the school could dismiss at 12:15 p.m. each Wednesday.

The board will also consider approval of the negotiated agreement with the Middletown Classified Employees Association.

Find out what Edgewood, Carlisle and Franklin will be considering after the jump.

Edgewood: The board will consider authorizing the district to participate in the Ohio School Facilities program, which provides state funding for the construction or remodel of schools. The district must still be approved on the state’s list of projects with a recommendation by the state schedule to occur July 24. According to our previous stories, Edgewood is considering reconfiguring its neighborhood schools to be grade-level buildings. About half the funding to remodel the existing building and construct to two buildings will come from the state.

Carlisle: Carlisle may be discussing a possible future operating levy at their meeting tonight. This year, Carlisle made $919,000 cuts from their budget, and the district is projected to have a positive balance of about $5,500 for each of the next two years. According to the treasurer’s report, there is no primary election scheduled in 2009, with only a November 2009 election planned. It is estimated to cost about $15,000 for a special election, which would take place either Feb. 3 or May 5.

Franklin: The board will consider hiring two elementary school principals: Tim Crowe Schenck Elementary School; and Dana Miller for Anthony Wayne Elementary. The board will also consider approving the retirement of Franklin’s Director of Curriculum Steven Buerschen, effective Dec. 31. Lunch prices are also set to be approved at $2.
