Board begins termination process for coach

In today’s paper, I wrote about the Madison Board of Education’s unanimous decision to begn termination proceedings against David “Jamie” Wagner, the teacher and softball coach accused of engaging in sexual activity with a 17-year-old Madison student.

The Madison community has been talking about this a lot over the last few days. It’s attracted attention from across the region to the township.

In the resolution the board voted on last night, a little more information came out about the situation.

According to the resolution to begin the termination process, Wagner engaged in sexual activity with a female Madison student on various dates during the 2007-08 school year. The 32-year-old is charged with two counts of sexual battery for allegedly having sex with the 17-year-old student twice at his Monroe home in April and May.

The resolution also says the coach “fostered, encouraged and established a romantic relationship with a female student.”

That we already knew. But then the resolution goes into more detail about the incident that tipped off the entire investigation: the allegedly sexually-explicit text messages sent to an 18-year-old student.

During the 2007-08 school year, Wagner received text messages from a female student of the Madison Local School District which were sexual in nature and took no action to stop the female student from sending him such sexually suggestive text messages, but instead by his conduct and responses, encouraged the female student to continue to send him sexually suggestive text messages.

And then the resolution revealed that Wagner had attended a party where a student he coached, the 18-year-old student he allegedly sent text messages to, drank alcohol and he did not try to stop her. Superintendent Chris Cline said the party was at Wright State University and that the student was disciplined.

He also said that the incident did not involve the softball team, which will play in the district championship this Saturday. Because of athletic code of conduct and Ohio High School Athletic Association rules, if the party had involved the team, it could have ended the post-season for the Mohawks.

So those are the infractions that are the basis for the board’s termination. Wagner will have 10 days to request a hearing. If he does not request one, the board can finalize the process after that ten day period.
