Report Card: Buffalo at Miami
Pass offense
B
A great day for wide receivers considering that this year’s leading receiver, Armand Robinson, was out with an injury and considering that last year’s leading receiver, Chris Givens, has missed most of the season with an injury. Brayden Coombs had no idea he had caught a school-record 14 passes until he was informed of the fact at the post-game press conference. Jamal Rogers had a career-high nine receptions, Dustin Woods caught a touchdown pass in his final game, Daniel Raudabaugh threw one in his final game. Dysert had a decent but unspectacular night, passing for 194 yards with a touchdown, along with an interception. And he was sacked five times.
Run offense
D
Danny Green looked solid in his brief playing time, running twice for 27 yards. But overall, the less said about Miami’s running game this year, the better.
Pass defense
C-minus
Buffalo’s Zach Maynard completed 13-of-18 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown, but wide receiver Terrel Jackson stole the show when he connected with tight end Jesse Rack on a 30-yard touchdown pass. It was Jackson’s first pass attempt of the season. Miami’s pass defense had no interceptions, no sacks, which isn’t surprising since Maynard spent most of the second half handing off. Also, to be fair to the RedHawks, they were pretty banged up on the defensive line and in the backfield.
Run defense
F
Junior running back Brandon Thermilus had run for 311 yards and two touchdowns in his first nine games. Against the RedHawks he ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Maynard also caused some damaged, scrambling for 61 yards and a touchdown. Evan Harris, Brandon Stephens, Jerrell Wedge and Luke Kelly did have tackles for loss. But the RedHawks allowed 240 yards on the ground and a 7.7-yard average per carry, which is not good.
Special teams
D
Trevor Cook nailed a 37-yard field goal and then missed a 29-yard chip shot. Punting stayed unspectacular until the end, and so did Miami’s return teams.
Intangibles
F
Miami officials have to be concerned about the size of its football crowds. There weren’t even close to 1,000 fans at Yager Stadium, though the 300 or so who did show up — and stayed until the end — deserve a medal. Fan attendance has been lacking for years for football, but this was a new low.

Haywood to recruit more protection for Dysert
By Pete Conrad
Miami University’s quarterback Zac Dysert has some pretty gaudy statistics, but one that doesn’t please head coach Michael Haywood is the number of times the redshirt freshman has been sacked: 45.
“We’re going to make some changes in our personnel,” Haywood said. “We’re going to recruit some more offensive linemen … We can’t allow the quarterback to be sacked like he’s been getting sacked.”
Although Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 39 times during his redshirt freshman season at Miami, he went on to become probably the greatest passer in Mid-American Conference history.
“I won’t compare Zac with Ben,” Haywood said, “but I think Zac has a bright future ahead … He’s coached by a great quarterbacks coach (Morris Watts).”

HOCKEY: Wrap-up
With the Shootout loss to Ferris State tonight, Miami’s overall record goes to 8-1-2 as shootout losses don’t count as game losses in the overall standings.
It does affect the RedHawks’ league standings as they now drop to 5-1-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The CCHA uses shootouts to determine victors, and this is the second year that they have done so.
Miami is now 2-3 all time in shootouts. Ironically, one of those wins includes a shootout win Miami enjoyed over Ferris State last season, which broke a 2-2 tie.
Ferris State is now 7-3-1 overall, 2-2-0-1 CCHA.
The two teams will meet up again on Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. start, here at the Steve Cady Arena on the Miami University campus.

HOCKEY: Miami scores!

He then raced up the left side of the rink, crossed into Bulldog territory just inside the Ferris State blue line and quckly dished off a pass to the right to freshman right defenseman Joe Hartman for a quick shot into the right of the goal!
Tie game as the near-capacity partisan Miami crowd goes bonkers. (They just announced the attendance as 3,337)
Hartman’s goal came when Ferris State was enjoying their third power play of the game, and with just 1.3 seconds left on the second period game clock.
The Village People’s “YMCA” is blaring from the loudspeakers, and a pair of Zambonis are groomin’ up the Cady Arena ice.

Report Card: Bowling Green at Miami
Pass offense
D
Dysert completed 29-of-48 passes for 259 yards, which isn’t bad. But he also had three interceptions and no touchdown passes, and none of his completions were longer than 21 yards. Jamal Rogers had a good receiving game, coming up with eight catches for 81 yard.
Run offense
C
Officially, Miami had 27 carries for 36 yards. But that includes a lot of Dysert’s yardage loss from sacks. Andre Bratton broke a 32-yard run, Miami’s longest of the season, and Thomas Merriweather had some tough runs up the middle, finishing with 25 yards on six carries.
Pass defense
C
Tyler Sheehan was held to 199 yards, but he made them count: three touchdowns, no interceptions. He dropped a long pass from wide receiver Freddie Barnes, who didn’t drop anything. Barnes had 10 catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns, which is a fairly normal game for him. Linebacker Jerrell Wedge and defensive end Mike Johns each had a sack, but the RedHawks could have used a lot more.
Run defense
D
The Falcons, not a big-time running team, finished with 146 yards on the ground with Chris Bullock ripping through the line of scrimmage in the fourth quarter. Wedge continues to play well, finishing with 13 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss. Anthony Kokal also had a busy night, tying Wedge with 13 tackles, including a team-high seven solo tackles, including a tackle for loss.
Special teams
F
Not much good to say here. Rogers fumbled the opening kickoff and Jim Broadway had to rally just to bring his punting average for the night up to 35.4 yards.
Intangibles
D
The RedHawks aren’t saying it, coach Michael Haywood isn’t buying it, but the RedHawks looked a little tired in the second half. Heck, they didn’t seem to be on top of their game from the start. It’s been a long season and these weekday games late in the season don’t help. These Thursday games, especially when they’re not being televised nationally, stink.

Miami’s Haddix said he learned much from Bramos
By Pete Conrad
Rodney Haddix II figures to see some serious playing time this season as a 6-foot-3 junior guard for Miami University’s basketball team, especially after connecting on 8-of-8 shots from the 3-point stripe during the exhibition season.
Michael Bramos, Miami’s Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, was a big influence, Haddix said.
“Playing behind Michael Bramos, you learn a lot of things which make the game a lot easier,” Haddix pointed out. “He was a very good leader. He looked after me when I was down. He gave me some good points and tips. And also just watching him, I learned to let the game come to me.”
Haddix saw only 50 minutes of playing time as a freshman, saw that number jump to 168 last season and started both of Miami’s exhibition games earlier this month. He scored 20 points against California (Pa.) on Nov. 1.

Injuries still taking heavy toll on Miami
By Pete Conrad
The list of the Miami RedHawks’ walking wounded doesn’t seem to be getting any shorter.
The status of several players this week are “day by day,” according to head coach Michael Haywood, including that of co-captain Jordan Gafford, who has missed the last two games with a stinger.
Haywood said, in fact, that it’s likely that his strong safety won’t play in either of Miami’s last two games.
“It’s a huge loss,” Haywood said. “Jordan has damaged his shoulder and has really been struggling to regain the strength in his shoulder. There’s no reason to get a young man out there and hurt himself worse than what he is now. If we’re in a championship run, then maybe he plays.”
Sophomore offensive tackle Brandon Brooks didn’t practice on Sunday, Haywood said, and also is “day by day” with a shoulder injury, something which has hampered him “the last four or five weeks.”
Senior running back Andre Bratton (turf toe), who has played in only four games, did return to practice on Sunday. But defensive tackle D.J. Svabik, who has played in only two games, is out for the rest of the year, and senior defensive tackle Martin Channels, who has missed two games, and true freshman linebacker Evan Harris both are questionable.

Miami wide receiver Cruse loved basketball first
By Pete Conrad
If Andy Cruse had followed his boyhood dreams, the Miami University redshirt freshman wide receiver might be catching passes from a point guard instead of quarterback Zac Dysert.
“Growing up I always wanted to play basketball, but when I went to high school I got real good at football and thought, wow, I can do something with this. I grew to love it,” Cruse said.
“I was always pretty good at football,” he said, “but I didn’t focus on it until my junior year. All of a sudden I started getting all these letters (from colleges).”
Cruse has become an important part of Miami’s receiving corps. He has 14 catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns, all in the last four games. He made a mind-boggling catch — he dove and came up with the ball one-handed — for a 29-yard gain during the RedHawks’ 31-24 victory over Toledo last Saturday.
Now that the RedHawks have tasted victory, he said, they want more.
“I think each week we’ve gotten better as a team … A four-game winning streak would be great,” he said, referring to the fact that Miami has three more games left in the season. “It makes football a lot more fun when you win.”
Cruse said the players have rallied behind Dysert, who is his roommate.
“His passion about the game and his talent have brought something new to the team,” Cruse said. “His running around back there has brought a new aspect to this team.”

Turnovers now helping Miami
By Pete Conrad
Miami University football coach Michael Haywood spent months preaching to his players the importance of holding onto the ball, of not throwing interceptions, of stripping the ball from the other team.
Now the roots from that preaching seem to have taken hold.
“That’s the second week in a row we win the turnover battle,” Haywood said today, referring to the RedHawks’ 31-24 victory over Toledo last Saturday, Oct. 31.
In that contest Toledo fumbled four times, including the fumble which secured the victory in the closing moments when safety Anthony Kokal knocked the ball loose from tight end Danny Noble just as Noble was about to score a touchdown.
That touchdown would have given Toledo the opportunity tie the game or take the lead (with a two-point conversion) with 1:01 left in the fourth quarter.
“That ball was only half a yard from the goal line,” Haywood said.
The loose ball hit the pylon at the front corner of the end zone. The officials didn’t see that until they viewed the replay and ruled that what originally was thought to be a Toledo touchdown was in fact a touchback. Miami got possession of the ball at its own 20-yard line.
When the announcement by the referee was made, the Miami sideline erupted in leaps and screams and hugs of joy.
“It was like, ‘What did he just say?’ ” Haywood remembered.
A turnover that was Just as important, however, was the 20-yard interception return for a touchdown by true freshman Wes Williams which gave Miami a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
“That really ignited us offensively and defensively,” Haywood said.
Miami won the turnover battle over Toledo 2-1. A week earlier they won the turnover battle against Northern Illinois 1-0 but lost the game 27-22.
Through the first seven games, the RedHawks had turned the ball over 26 times while forcing only six turnovers.
