Football: More names, including Peterson

By Pete Conrad

In the mood for more speculation about Miami’s new head football coach?

Here are some more names to consider — including a Middletown native and member of the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame — and which, according to a source who wishes to remain anonymous, are being seriously considered on the Oxford campus:

• John Peterson, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Ohio State, a native of Middletown who was a high school all-American for the Middies, the 1986 Ohio Offensive Lineman of the Year. Was an assistant coach at Miami (1999-2003, running game and offensive line), also coached four years at Akron. Is in his fifth season with the Buckeyes. As an offensive guard at Ohio State, he played in the Cotton, Hall of Fame and Liberty bowls. In 2001 was inducted into the Middletown High School Hall of Fame. In 2007 was inducted into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame.

• Mitch Browning, 51, in his first year as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at Syracuse, but whose future there has been in doubt since the firing of head coach Greg Robinson. Also has been an assistant coach at North Carolina State, Ohio State (1982), Kent State, Kansas and Minnesota (1997-2006). Is a 1979 graduate of Capital University.

• Mike Haywood, 44, offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Notre Dame. Has 21 seasons of college coaching experience, also including stops at Minnesota, Army, Ohio, Ball State, LSU and Texas. Was named NCAA Division I-A Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association in 2005 in his first season at Notre Dame. Played four seasons at Notre Dame (1982 and 84-86) as a flanker and then cornerback.

• Scott Loeffler, 34, in his first season as quarterbacks coach with the Detroit Lions. Former quarterbacks coach at the University of Michigan. Was with the Wolverines for six seasons.

• Curt Mallory, 39, co-defensive coordinator and defensive backfield coach at Illinois. Also has been an assistant coach at Indiana, Central Michigan and Ball State. Was a two-year letterwinner at Michigan and played in the 1990 Rose Bowl and 1991 Gator Bowl.

• Don Treadwell, Michigan State offensive coordinator and former Miami assistant coach who has been mentioned in previous JournalNews articles, also is rumored to be in serious consideration.

• Another coach mentioned as a possibility is Randy Fichtner, wide receivers coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers who has been a college assistant at Memphis, USC, Purdue, UNLV and Arkansas State.

Will John Wauford get consideration? He was on track to be considered head coach material when Montgomery was hired, and before the Marshall incident.
