The annual Kings Music Association Poinsettia sale starts this week.
Students in Kings High School’s symphonic, concert, marching and jazz bands and the Kings Drumline and Winterguard will be selling poinsettias from now until Friday, November 7, according to a KMA spokesperson. Plants are available in five colors and four sizes.
KMA students will deliver orders after December 2! If you wish to purchase a poinsettia, contact Beth Steel at (513) 683-1199 or bsteel1225@zoomtown.com.

Some teachers like Karen Vome at Western Row Elementary in Mason are taking it upon themselves to be more environmentally sensitive.
I met Karen Vome earlier this year when she was given a Project Excellence Award through the Warren County Area Progress Council for being an innovative teacher. She’s the science chair at Western Row.
Each week, she sends a message to everyone in her building, showing them ways they can conserve energy. She reminds staff members to use fewer paper towels in the restrooms, turn off classroom lights and computers at the end of the day and recycling old newspapers and magazines.

A large group of Mason High School students was recognized for their academic success through the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program.
MHS Principal Dave Allen commended the students for their accomplishment. “You all are blessed with talents and gifts,” he said. “You have the ability to do great things.”
Among 16,000 U.S. students competing for National Merit scholarships are 13 MHS semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Mason’s National Merit semi-finalists are: Raia Contractor; Anupama Joseph; Flora Massah; Namratha Sandella; Michael Verleye; Benjamin Wagner; Edward Wang; Ray Wang; Kiersten Wones; Yiling Wu; Tong Zhan; Xiaomin Zhang, and; Charles Zheng.
Mason student Deanna Allbrittin is a semi-finalist and Kendra Washington is a Commended Scholar in the National Achievement Program, recognizing the country’s top African American students.
Twenty-six MHS students were recognized as commended students.

Parking for Mason High’s homecoming game will be diverted due to the game’s fireworks display. You can find the changes the district’s website.
District administrators changed parking locations to guard against the possibility of fireworks debris landing on cars parked in the student lot at the high school, 6100 Mason-Montgomery Road.
The upper lot will be closed at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. Any students who park in this lot must have their cars moved by then.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. against the Fairfield Indians.

The annual Mason-Deerfield Rotary Club’s annual Chicken Barbecue is Friday, Oct. 3 in Mason.
The dinner sale supports community projects in Mason and Deerfield Twp. and the Mason Fine Arts Council’s programs for Mason City Schools.
Dinners will be sold from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Mason Middle School, 6370 Mason-Montgomery Road.
Each dinner costs $8 and includes chicken, two side dishes, dessert and a drink. Participants may dine in or carry out meals. Rotary Club members are selling tickets, so call (513) 398-0474 to get yours.
Members of the Mason-Deerfield Rotary Club are business and professional leaders who live or work in Mason and Deerfield Twp. as well as nearby communities in Warren, Hamilton, Butler and Clermont counties. The club meets at 7:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Cincinnati Marriott Northeast on Mason-Montgomery Road and I-71 in Deerfield Twp. This weekend, Mason High School celebrates homecoming for the first time in the new Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium.
Festivities begin with a bonfire Thursday, Oct. 2 around sundown behind the high school. On Friday, Oct. 3, the Comets take on the Fairfield Indians at 7:30 p.m. with a game that promises Mason’s traditional fireworks from Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks. Rozzi’s also does fireworks performances for the Cincinnati Reds and WEBN, according to the website.
Saturday’s homecoming dance will begin at 8 p.m. in the Mason Middle School Arena with the theme “A Night in Wonderland,” from the Alice in Wonderland story. All presale tickets are gone, but last chance tickets will be sold to MHS students from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the high school. Student Activities Director Lorri Fox-Allen said non-Mason students would not be admitted at that point.

KINGS HOMECOMING APPROACHES
Kings High School’s homecoming is right around the corner. The game against the Wilmington Hurricanes starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at Kings Stadium. And the homecoming dance is the following night at the Sharonville Convention Center, 11355 Chester Road in Sharonville.
But before all the fun begins, the district will have its its 13th annual Kings Homecoming 5K and Mile Fun Run at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Kings Stadium.
A one-mile fun run starts the race.
Preregistration for the 5K ended Wednesday, Oct. 1, but participants can still register the day of the race for $15, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Runners are not guaranteed to receive T-shirts on the day of the race.

Mason City Schools has moved its Tuesday, Aug. 26 regular board of education meeting to Wednesday, Aug. 27.
The meeting will still take place in the Harvard Room at Mason High School, but it will start at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.
Spokeswoman Tracey Carson said the meeting was changed due to a scheduling conflict.
School started today, August 20, and there is a new arrival/dismissal plan for Mason High School. Click here to find get the plan and a color map of campus from the district’s Web site.
