Home beer brewers invited to participate in Oktoberfest

By Mark Fisher, Staff Writer

The Dayton Art Institute wants you to get brewing.

DAI has announced a call for entries for its 2nd Annual Oktoberfest Home Brew Beer contest, intended for home brewers of beer made with non-commercial equipment. And although beers entered into the contest aren’t due to DAI until September, the time to begin brewing is now, because, well, you just can’t hurry fermentation.

Judging will occur during Oktoberfest, which will take place Sept. 25-26 on the DAI grounds. Judging will be conducted by a panel of judges in three categories: Pale Ale/India Pale Ale, Wheat Beers (German or American) and Porter/Stout. The first place winner and runner up in each category will compete for Best in Show.

But it’s not all about what’s inside the bottle: Each category will also be judged for Best Label, with those winners also taking part in the Best in Show judging. Home brewers are encouraged to design their most creative labels reflective of their personalities and the style of their brew, according to the DAI folks.

The entrance fee is $10 per entry, or three beers by the same brewer for $20.

For a complete list of all contest rules — as well as registration forms, prizes and information about submitting entries to The Dayton Art Institute — visit www.dayton artinstitute.org and click on the Oktoberfest link.

Nostalgia on tap at 2 ’80s-themed events this weekend

Joan Jett vs. Billy Idol Tribute Show

Vex is hosting a retro-flashback battle of the ’80s rock stars this Thursday featuring Jasper the Colossal, Good English and NPD. See all three acts for just $5. Plus they’ll be drawing a winner for two Billy Idol tickets. If you’ve entered to win the tickets at a previous ’80s Night, then make sure you’re there, because you must be present to win.

K99 Block Party

Although not strictly an ’80s band, you’re bound to hear some great classic rock covers when the boys of Red Moon play the Town Square at The Greene, Friday. In addition to the live tunes, enjoy $2 beers courtesy of Bud Light Lime, raffles prizes and giveaways, food from Subway, and a Harley Davidson display. One of the prizes being raffled off is a trip for two on the Bud Light Port Paradise Cruise. All proceeds from alcohol sales will benefit the Pink and Chrome Ride for the Cure, an open motorcycle event in October to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Greater Cincinnati.
