Catch the fever of March Madness at these bar best bets

By Katie Wedell, Staff Writer

Is your bracket busted yet?

Whether you’re still in the running to win your office pool, or you could care less about college basketball, these bar best bets will bring out the March Madness in everyone.

Avery March Madness contest

Boston’s Bistro and Pub and South Park Tavern are among 16 bars across Ohio competing in Avery Brewing Company’s March Madness competition to sell the most of two beers, Avery White Rascal White Ale and Avery India Pale Ale.

Boston’s will be selling both varieties by the pint for $3 or in half-gallon growlers for $14 ($9 if you already have a growler). South Park is offering either beer in a 14 oz. glass for $3 each.

Each week the bars sales will be tallied and compared to that week’s bracket competitor. The winner moves on for another week. Help your favorite bar earn bragging rights for the whole year by stopping in and ordering a pint.

  • Where: Boston’s Bistro and Pub, 7500 N. Main St., Dayton, or South Park Tavern, 1301 Wayne Ave., Dayton

March Madness specials at Fricker’s

It’s in their slogan, “Food, Fun, Sports, Spirits!” Fricker’s Vandalia location is offering up March Madness specials throughout the tournament including $13 super tubes of Bud Light (100 ounces of beer you can pour at your table) with collectible stadium cups. If that deal doesn’t make you like college hoops, nothing will.

  • Where: Fricker’s, 22 Foley Drive, Vandalia
  • Hours: 11 a.m.-2:30 a.m. every day
  • The bite: No cover

Milano’s Idols Competition

Get into the competitive spirit at Milano’s on Brown Street this month during their annual karaoke contest. Milano’s is always a good choice for basketball watching with tons of TVs and fresh-baked subs, pizza and calzones,

But once the NCAA champ has been crowned, the action will still be fierce, as karaoke hopefuls duke it out to be crowned Milano’s Idol 2010.

The competition kicks off March 24 and runs every Wednesday until April 14. The finals will be held April 21.

  • Where: Milano’s, 1834 Brown St., Dayton
  • When: 10 p.m.-2 a.m. every Wednesday
  • The bite: Free. Call (937) 222-7072 for information on how to sign up and sing.

A Celebration of Life for Dan Stork

The band Flashback had originally planned a benefit concert for March 28 to help out their ailing keyboardist Dan Stork. They were in the midst of recruiting local bands to play the show when Dan passed away March 14.

The show must go on, the way Dan would have wanted it to.

“Dan has supported live music in the Dayton area for many, many years. We just want to show our appreciation and dedication to this wonderful family,” said Flashback band member Brenda Lambros.

The band lineup for the show is: White Rabbit, Lost Highway, Betty Lane, Night Reign, The Johnsons, Diddley, Yellow Snow Cones, Karizma. In addition to lots of live music there will be raffles throughout the day, with all proceeds going to Dan’s wife Peggy to help with bills.

  • Where: Upper Deck Tavern, 2651 Blanchard Avenue, Moraine
  • When: 2 p.m.-midnight, Sunday, March 28
  • Admission: $5
