Cupid, vampires and more Valentine’s bar fun
Remember when Valentine’s Day was all about flowers, candy, and of course, spending time with the one you love? Well, times have changed.
The slew of Valentine’s events planned at local bars this weekend are anything but sweet, and don’t have much to do with love. Unless you love vampires, S&M, dancing cupids and beer.
Since we love all those things, this just may be the best V-Day ever!
Masque
Masque is throwing the vampire dance party of the decade (so far) aptly titled “Love Bites”. Dress in your best Dracula attire. Everyone who attends will receive blood capsules, white face paint, fangs and a necklace to spruce up their costume. Meet and greet with the Dayton Ballet Dracula cast while enjoying complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drink specials. Ticket holders get a private entrance. Tickets can be purchased at www.daytonballetbarre.com.
Where: Masque, 34 N. Jefferson St., Dayton
When: 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., Friday, Feb. 12
The bite: Dayton Ballet Barre members $15, students $20, public tickets in advance $20, tickets at the door $25.
Yellow Rose
Celebrate early with a Valentine’s Eve Party at Yellow Rose including a balloon drop at midnight, prize giveaways and a group “Cupid Shuffle” with the man himself.
Where: The Yellow Rose, 852 Watertower Lane, West Carrollton
When: Doors open at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13
The bite: $3, (937) 475-6990 for more information
Aquarius
The 3rd Annual Black Hearts Ball will include music from Minneapolis-based Souless Affection, DJ Ditdot and Matt J. Celebrate Valentine’s Day the way vampires do - with drink specials! They’ll be awarding prizes to the Black Heart King and Queen as well.
Where: Aquarius, 135 E. Second St., Dayton
When: 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 13
The bite (pun intended): $7 for couples, $3 for individuals with tickets, $5 each without tickets. Call (937) 223-1723 or go to www.aquariusnightclub.com for ticket information.
Club Vex
Vex’s “Bad Romance” Valentine’s Fetish Ball is billed as a night of love, lust and latex. Whether your valentine is submissive or dominatrix, you can both enjoy EBM, Industrial, Goth, Synthpop and Darkwave from DJ Kris, Infidel-icious, Matt Freeman and Dock resident DJ Mike Dangers. Plus appearances by Mistress Naughtya and Domina Gin & Friends.
Where: Club Vex, 101 S. St. Clair St., Dayton
When: 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12
The bite: 18 and up $5, 21 and up $3, go to myspace.com/nightofsyn for more information
Adobe Gila’s
Adobe’s is once again throwing their cleverly named Anti-VD party. You can’t contract VD from dancing - we think - and you don’t have to make your dance partner your Valentine, so head to The Greene for dancing all night long. Plus enjoy $10 domestic beer buckets and “Love Bug” shot specials.
Where: Adobe Gila’s, 78 Plum St., Beavercreek
When: 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13
The bite: No cover, call (937) 458-0330 for more information
Boston’s Bistro and Pub
Boston’s is tapping some unique imperial stouts and chocolates this Thursday through Saturday. On Thursday, try out Southern Tier beers including Choklat Imperial Stout, Jah-va, Mokah, Crème’ Brulee, and Cu-vee’, all vintage 2009. First 12 couples to sign-up also receive a fresh cut red rose! Plus enjoy Boston’s Sweetheart Special Friday and Saturday. Get two 10 ounce glasses of Southern Tier Imperial Stout beer, a chocolate sampler and a 12-inch pizza for only $25.
Where: Boston’s Bistro and Pub, 7500 N. Main St., Dayton
When: Tasting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11
The bite: $10 per person, call (937) 461-1002 for more information
Taylor’s Tavern
If your valentine is more into bluegrass than candy hearts, take him/her to Taylor’s, where country/bluegrass band Southern Dysfunction will be performing. Last time the band stopped in, the place was packed. Luckily there’s a huge outdoor smoking area with a bar and maybe even a bonfire.
Where: Taylor’s Tavern, 5539 Dayton Springfield Road, Enon
When: 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13
The bite: Call (937) 323-0174 for more information
