Learn how to savor as well as save this holiday

This year was rather tame for me in terms of Black Friday. I checked Web sites before venturing out and found most of the items I wanted for the same price with free shipping online, making it unnecessary to get up before dawn to get the deals. When I did head out it was closer to 9 a.m. and I found most of the deals I wanted still available in stores.

This could be good news for shoppers as retailers may have merchandise they still need to sell off. This is likely bad news for the economy as sales on the day after Thanksgiving were up just .5 percent from a year earlier, according to ShopperTrak, lower than originally expected. We as consumers are still not spending, not even on good deals.

But I just wanted to add a reminder for all those shopping for their loved ones this holiday season to also remember to savor this time. It’s been a tough year, with family members and friends unemployed and people facing some tough financial situations.

While in line on Black Friday I listened to the conversation of the two women in front of me. They told me earlier that had been out since 4 a.m. shopping and were now at their last store, their cart overflowing with gifts, wrapping paper and bows. One of the women began to ridicule the other as she explained how on Christmas she had each of her children open one present at a time and thank the giver before the next person could open one. The friend told this woman this practice was “ridiculous” and she should just let the kids rip into them. She then explained how she assigns each child a number or letter so until they start opening, there is no way to tell who got what presents and that once she says ready, set, go on Christmas Day, “it is all carnage.” She also said she has to make sure to give an equal number of presents to each child “or I never hear the end of it.”

Pardon me, but is this really what Christmas is all about? I do not have children, so I cannot comment on how I handle their presents, but I do hope when I have my own that I will base it on a much more loving gift-giving practice I experienced growing up.

As one of five children with my dad the sole salary contributor, Christmas was a little tight for my family. Part of the gift was the wrapping, which my parents pain-stakingly completed each night after we had gone to bed. I remember presents piled high in foil papers with beautiful wire ribbon decorating each package. Each child had a “section” under the tree, and one by one after breakfast my dad would hand them out, each of us watching as one present was opened, admired, likely photographed and then the giver was thanked. We went in order of oldest to youngest, with mom and dad opening last. The process was a long one, sometimes requiring a lunch break, and often there were needed items like new underwear, pajamas and socks wrapped under that tree mixed in with the toys and games, but it was all appreciated.

After the gifting was done, the wire ribbon was wrapped up, saved for another holiday, and our gifts put away. This was the practice until I was 22 and moved out on my own.

I’m not saying we were perfect angels, at times children are impatient, but my parents were bent on making sure we appreciated what we got and what we gave to others. After each Christmas we also spent time going through our old things and making a pile of items to donate to charity. My parents stocked up on wrapping paper and ribbon for the next year at the end of season sales.

The point of this story is I hope you will remember as you are out looking for deals to get your friends and family, remember to love and appreciate each one of them as well. When the kids are older and the electronics and toys have all worn out, all we will have left are the memories, so make them something to savor.

Cyber Monday deals are going on now

Instead of freezing in the early, cold hours of the morning the day after Thanksgiving, you decided to stay snuggled in your bed and get a few more hours a sleep. That’s because you knew a secret: Cyber Monday.

Cyber Monday, the year’s biggest online shopping day, is expected to attract about 69 million people to access the Internet Nov. 30 to score special savings, even from their workplace. And young adults ages 18-24 are the most likely age group to do that workplace shopping, according to a new e-holiday survey by BIGresearch. Check out some of the deals up for grabs here.

More retailers plan to offer promotions to grab a piece of that hefty shopping audience, according to a report by the National Retail Federation. Nearly 9 out of 10 retailers said they are planning specific Cyber Monday deals, up from about 84 percent last year.

Big names like Target, Walmart, J.C. Penney, Sephora and Toys R Us said they will be running online sales throughout the holiday weekend. Many promotions will include free shipping or free shipping after on certain-priced orders.

Middletown resident Stephanie Ross said her favorite find the Monday after Thanksgiving last year was an LCD HDTV for $330 at Office Depot, below the price most retailers offered as doorbusters on Black Friday.

“I go to the stores for toys for my kids, most people aren’t as cut-throat about those. But electronics, I just stay patient and check online for posts about what’s coming Monday,” she said.

There are several Web sites that will gather online sales ad information and coupons for Cyber Monday. Two sites to bookmark would be cybermonday.com and cybermonday.net. To find special online offers on top of sale prices, visit GoPromoCodes.com.

But shoppers should be careful and take precautions when shopping online. According to the National Consumers League, don’t shop using unencrypted or open wireless networks as these are prone to hackers. Also, pay using a credit card as under federal law you can dispute the charges if the items is not what you ordered or is not delivered. You can also dispute unauthorized charges.

“The Internet can make your shopping faster and easier, but there can also be pitfalls if you’re not careful,” said Sally Greenberg, executive director of the NCL.

Tips to bag a bargain this holiday shopping season

Everyone’s goal in today’s economy should be to bag a bargain while doing their holiday shopping. And believe it or not, that does not mean you need to be in line at 3 a.m. shivering at a big box store.

Here are some simple tips from bargain Web sites, financial gurus and the Better Business Bureau to help you get a handle on your holiday shopping.

    Tips
  • Make a list. It’s not just Santa who should be making it and checking it twice, either. Start with a realistic budget for holiday gifts. Split that between the people you want to give a gift to. Consider gift exchanges for siblings and friends to save money. Write down an item for each person and stick with it. That way you won’t be sucked in by the glitz and glam at the mall. Consider shopping online to avoid further temptation, but make sure to budget for shipping charges.
  • Plastic is not fantastic. I got a postcard in the mail offering “Double Rewards Points for All Purchases Made on Black Friday With Your Credit Card.” Despite temptation, I tore it up. Getting $5 extra in rewards is not worth the debt and possible regret you’ll feel come January when the bills come in. Budget using money you have in savings and checking. Make this the gift to yourself to come out of this holiday season debt-free.
  • Get coupons. There is a coupon for virtually everything. Go to hotcouponworld.com and click on their coupon database to find online, printable and newspaper coupons available on certain items or even at certain stores. Visit GoPromoCodes.com to find coupons for online shopping.
  • Research it. The Web is a valuable tool for checking competitor prices and customer reviews. Find the item online and use the product number in a search engine like Google to check prices and find reviews. Amazon.com is also a valuable tool for reviews. Consumerworld.org offers an online price checker.
  • Some things are too good to be true. The Better Business Bureau that especially when shopping online, have the due diligence to check out the company before making a purchase. Run their name through the BBB’s Web site to check their rating. Also, icons with VeriSign, IQNet or TRUSTe should be clickable, taking you to another site that verifies the certification authenticity.
  • Get free shipping. Many retailers are offering free shipping up to Dec. 17, the last day most will guarantee you’ll get it before Christmas. To find out which retailers are offering specials, visit FreeShipping.org.

Gear up for Black Friday shopping

Fellow newspaper blogger Jill Kelley posted the following to help you get prepared for Black Friday. And frankly, I could not have said it better:

This Black Friday, which will be this Friday, Nov. 27, might be one for the record books. It not only is taking place near the end of a long year of price cuts, but it also is the unofficial kickoff to an already highly competitive holiday shopping season.

With all the price wars, extreme discounts and blockbuster sales we have seen in the last two months, it will be interesting to see just how low the stores go to get our business.

Top 10 tips to Black Friday success

Since Black Friday is a day unlike any other in our shopping year, here are some tips to help you get the most out of your efforts:

    1. Plan ahead. Check out Web sites (listed below) that offer leaked information about the upcoming sales. It already has been reported on these sites that Walmart is supposed to have a 50-inch TV for $598, and a Vivitar digital camera for $59.99 at Kohl’s. Also, some stores and malls already have released their Black Friday circulars and they are included there as well.

    2. Check the ads. Although many of these sites and news agencies have gone to great lengths to get the scoop on these deals, you won’t know for sure about some of them until you see the store’s ads.

On Thanksgiving, the Middletown Journal and Hamilton JournalNews will publish its biggest newspaper of the year, which contains an enormous volume of ads. There will be more ads in the paper Friday, as well.

    1. Know what you are looking for. Between the sites and the ads, get a good idea of what you want and go after it. This is not a good day to meander if there is a specific deal you want.

    2. Compare prices. Either using the ads or online with sites such as PriceGrabber.com, find out how good a deal you are getting.

    3. Bring the ads with you. If you are shopping at a store that offers lowest price guarantees (like Walmart and Lowe’s), show them the ad and take advantage of the store’s offer.

    4. Have a game plan. Map out the stores you want to hit and when depending on sales you don’t want to miss and when the discounts are being offered. Also, either pack a meal or figure out where you may want to eat. Wear comfortable shoes and don’t carry a heavy purse (or any purse, if you can help it.)

    5. Shop early. Most stores offer their best discounts between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Black Friday. Target is one of the few that is offering the same level of discounts all day.

    6. Shop online. You can avoid the crowds and get most of the same deals by staying home and shop at the stores online. Many offer their Black Friday discounts starting after midnight. Check the specific store online for complete details.

    7. Shop with your receipt. If you want to make sure you get an item at the Black Friday sales price, buy it early in the week and come back on Black Friday for a price adjustment. Most stores will refund you the difference within a certain time frame. Check with your chosen store before you do this, however, to verify the specific rules of that store.

    8. Keep your identity safe. It might be chaotic out there, so take only what credit cards or checks you need. Clean out your wallet and don’t carry anything with your Social Security on it.

Web sites “leak” Black Friday ads

Retailers historically have kept their plans for Black Friday sales under wraps until Thanksgiving.

But, with this worldwide web of information at everyone’s fingertips, it is much easier to find out information about everything — including embargoed advertisements.

Now, some of that information (like much on the Internet) is speculatory, but there is plenty of legitimate information as well.

Here are some of the better Web sites devoted to Black Friday. They all have multiple listings, but I have noted some of the reported deals you can find on those sites.

www.GottaDeal.com: Was quoted by CNN when the site noted Target would have $3 toasters and coffeemakers, deep deals on high-definition televisions, and discounts of 50 percent on clothes and toys.

www.BlackFriday.info: Notes 14-foot trampoline with safety enclosure for $170 (usually $298) at Walmart will be on sale.

www.iBlackFriday.com: Lists Dynex 7-inch digital photo frame at Best Buy for $29.99 (regularly $89.99) on Friday.

www.Black-Friday.net: Has Macy’s ad offering all Holiday Lane and Martha Stewart Collection ornaments and decor for 50 percent off that day.

BFads.net: Notes deal at GameStop offering three free games in bundles with sale of Xbox 360 Elite and PS3 120GB holiday bundles on Black Friday. Those systems are each $299.99.

    Deals this week

As noted earlier in this article, this season has been an excellent one for getting great deals and should continue to be before and after Black Friday.

This week, in fact, there are several discounts of note:

Best Buy has multiple DVDs on sale, including a great deal on many TV shows on DVD for $12.99 (regularly $34.99 to $39.99). In its four-day sale, Best Buy also has Garmin GPS systems marked down by $70 to $230.

Toys R Us has all Nintendo DS and PSP games on sale for buy one, get one half off. Stein Mart has up to 60 percent off through Wednesday.

Kohl’s is having some “Sunday-only” specials today, offering up to 50 percent and 60 percent off clothes and home items.

JCPenney has a “final days” sale today and Monday, with clothes for up 55 percent off and coats up to 60 percent off.

Sears has 50 percent off Disney clothes and toys.

Target has 50 percent off select games and toys, including a guitar that is regularly $149 marked down to $74.99.

Walgreens has Christmas lights, wrapping paper and cards for buy one, get one free this week.

Big Lots has 20-inch wreaths and poinsettias for $4.

Michaels has Christmas trees on sale for up to 50 percent off.

Kroger Marketplace has 50 percent off its mix and match dinnerware.

And starting Tuesday and lasting through Saturday, Macy’s is marking down items storewide 25 percent to 50 percent, with an extra 15 percent off with a “Wow!” pass that can be found either in this newspaper or online.

Check out day after Thanksgiving deals

Your newspaper is still the No. 1 source for day-after-Thanksgiving sales ads, also known as Black Friday. But if you want to get an unofficial idea of what will be available, you can use bfads.net.

This site posts ads they find for the special shopping day for users to browse and search for sales. Not all of these are released to the site from the store, so I cannot condone the ads nor verify they are authentic, as the bfads.net site outlines. However, it can give you an idea of the sales and maybe help you get a shopping list together.

Some stores, like Walmart, do release advance copies of their ads to the site prior to being printed in the newspaper. For complete ads for all of your area stores running specials, pick up a copy of the newspaper at a gas station or open store on Thanksgiving or subscribe. I look at these Web sites but I always make sure I have a physical copy of the ad from my paper to back-up pricing and price matches.

Remember, Target and Walmart price match, so you can get a deal on Black Friday if another store is selling something cheaper but you would rather make one stop and get it at Target or Walmart!

Free Febreze Pet Pal Pack for new dog owners

Save a buck for your new pup!

Sign up for a new account on Dogster, the Web networking site for dogs, and get a free Febreze Pet Pal Pack for adding your new addition to the site. I just got my dog, Cody, in July so I hope he qualifies. You need a photo of your dog to upload with the profile.

To get your freebies, go here. There is a limited supply so I am not sure how long this freebie will be valid. I signed up my cat for Catster and got a coupon for free cat food… unfortunately it was for a quantity I cannot find in any of my local stores, but at least it came! I hope this one does, too!

Save hundreds on electronics at Walmart Saturday

Walmart is having a pre-Black Friday sale, marking down some major electronics to record-low prices to entice shoppers.

This Saturday, November 7th, starting at 8 a.m., Walmart will be having an exclusive 6-item sale, including the Xbox 360 for $199, plus get a $100 gift card when you buy it, and a laptop computer for $298. I got the scoop from bfads.net, a Web site which posts Black Friday ads before they come out. To check out the savings this weekend at Walmart, go to the Black Friday Ads Web site here.

Update: I would remind my readers that this is a blog for savings, not a blog for inappropriate name-calling and speech. This is about saving money, so please keep focus.

Request a free drink sample of Plexus Slim here.

Sign up for this free Tylenol online calendar and get a bunch of coupons off Tylenol products. This would match up nicely with the Mega Sale event happening at Kroger this week. Print out some of these coupons and get very cheap and free Tylenol products!

Get a free sample of Intimate Organics Aromatherapy Oil in Lemongrass and Coconut here.

Just in time for those holiday packages and cards, click here to get free Avery shipping and address labels.

Walmart is offering a free Garnier Nutritioniste sample here. This is supposed to help reduce the signs of sun damage around your eyes.

Get ready for flu season with this free FluPak, which includes a disposable face mask, tow anti-bacterial hand wipes, thermometer, and information on the seasonal flu.

This is a HOT deal and I am not sure how much longer it will last. Canvaspeople.com is offering a free 8x10 canvas portrait or $55 off any order when you sign-up here. You have to pay shipping, which is $14.95, but that is still much lower than what the typical canvas portrait will cost you. This would be a great gift for a family member or a way to get personal, unique art in your home! But hurry! I ordered an artistic photo I took on my last vacation, it will make a great piece of art in my den.

Surprise the kids this year by getting these free personalized letters from Santa. It comes in the mail and will really make the kids excited if they still believe in old Mr. Claus.

Get gift cards for old video games

Toys-R-Us has launched a new “Trade Games for Gift Cards” plan. Check out the list of games they will accept for trade-in, print a shipping label, mail it to the address provided and they’ll mail you a gift card for the trade-value.

This isn’t necessarily a revolutionary idea, a lot of stores will buy used video games for cash or credit, such as Blockbuster, Amazon.com and Game Stop. Which program is best for you depends on your shopping preferences.

This Toys-R-Us deal might be a good one if you’ve got kids and there are games they don’t play anymore you could trade-in for gift cards to get other toys they like for Christmas.

For more information on the new program at Toys-R-Us, click here.

I saved $143 on groceries last week. Find out how you can save

I had one of my proudest grocery shopping days all year this weekend. I bought $215 worth of groceries last week but paid only $72! How was that possible? It’s thanks the the Mega Event at Kroger going on this week. I got items like Cheez-its for 25 cents, free Snuggle fabric softener and All Laundry detergent for $1. All of the coupon savings helped me save enough that my total also included non-sale items like fresh veggies, bananas, ground beef, yogurt and milk.

One of the best ways to get savings like this is to stock-up on items while they are supper cheap so you don’t have to buy them later. When I hear people say, “I don’t need that right now,” I think: will you need it later? I didn’t need 5 bottles of Snuggle fabric softener now, but those 5 bottles were FREE, a price you just can’t beat, and they won’t go bad so I can stock up and use them when I need them. I stockpile items like that as much as I can up to how much I think I will reasonably use before their expiration date. Sometimes I get extras and give them to family, friends and charity.

Check out the savings below and start knocking some serious bucks off your grocery bill!

The 10 Item Mega Event is in effect. Buy 10 participating items, get $5 off instantly at checkout. Mix and match items from this list for the savings. This list only includes items with coupons. The first price is what the item would cost with coupons, the second price is what it will cost when you buy 10 participating items.
