Marsh Supermarkets reneges on $10 off coupon

The Consumerist is reporting Marsh Supermarkets, based in Indiana with locations here locally, has stopped accepting a $10 off coupon offered to customers of Facebook after apparent unauthorized use of the coupon.

According to the Consumerist.com, the coupon was available on the company’s Facebook page and offered $10 off a purchase of $10 or more. However, the company abruptly stopped accepting the coupon Friday, July 31. In a statement on its page, Marsh said it had to cancel the promotion due to the coupon being “widely distributed in an unauthorized manner throughout our marketing area.”

The company cited replicated copies of the coupon. However, according to the article, the posting encouraged Facebook friends to share the coupon, which many did with co-workers, family and friends. Apparently, that meant have them join and print out the coupon, not make copies and distribute them to everyone you know. Needless to say, friends of Marsh were not happy. Read their wall postings here.

So what do you think of this rescinded offer? Did you manage to use the coupon?

This may be part of a larger issue surrounding printable coupons and unauthorized use of them by customers. Just remember, when you clip them from the newspaper, your grocer will always take them!
