Get $5 meals on the 5th at local restaurants

MIDDLETOWN — Thirteen Middletown restaurants will be offering $5 meal specials on the fifth of August, September and October as part of a Middletown Pride in Action campaign meant to spur the local economy and pride in the community.

Each business has chosen a menu item to offer at a discount one day of each month. Items differ between restaurants and may differ from lunch to dinner.

Edith Kohler, chairwoman of the project, compiled the list of 13 locally controlled restaurants from the 88 located in the city. It is hoped the project will give each of the participants a business boost and could be expanded to include the nationally run establishments in the future, said group member Ann Mort.

“We encourage everyone to go out and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, and enjoy this thing, and maybe boost the economy a bit,” Mort said.

China Garden, located at 616 N. University Blvd., will offer any of its lunch specials with a side such as crab rangoon, egg roll or soup for $5 all day. Manager Yan Ting said the special is a way the restaurant can compete with the $5 sub specials popping up at chain stores.

“We thought that everyone has the $5 footlongs, we just wanted to try our own specials and see,” she said.

For Mike James, general manager of LaRosa’s at 4900 Roosevelt Blvd., the specials are just part of what he felt the restaurant should do to help customers who are struggling with the economy.

“We know how the economy is and our employees and families, they live in Middletown and we feel like Middletown is our home, our family and we need to pitch in and give back,” he said.

Already, James said LaRosa’s plans to offer a hoagie Aug. 5, a small pizza Sept. 5 and a calzone Oct. 5, for $5 all day for dine-in and carry-out meals.
