Find out what auto repairs should really cost
Being married to a mechanic has been a real eye-opener as far as how much auto repairs really cost. Whether you are a woman or not, the fact is you should know a little about cars so that you don’t get fleeced at the repair shop. Not that mechanics are crooks, that is certainly not true. But pleading ignorance when it comes to car repair and maintenance can be a mistake that will certainly cost you.
The problem is for most people, you don’t know who to ask or how to tell if you are being overcharged
Fear not. Visit RepairPal.com. Enter your car’s make and model and ZIP code as well as the car’s suspected issue, to get a fair estimate of the cost. It factors in the cost of parts and labor. I will note this only really works if you know what is wrong with the car. For instance, a rattling noise can be, well, anything, so I would suggest getting your car checked by a mechanic first for a diagnoses. After you know the issue and have the shop’s estimate, visit the site to see if you’re being overcharged. Then act from there.
Besides listing the cost, the site will give you a comparison between dealership repairs and taking it to an independent shop.

The article title is misleading. Why do writers do that? Anyway, in the article it clearly says “ballpark estimate” that definately is not the same as “what auto repairs really cost.” Just get 2 or 3 estimates.
