Web site logs gas saved by cyclists

I followed a link from the CNN story I mentioned Wednesday, and came across Gas Free Commute.com. It’s a website where users can track commuting miles and automatically computer calories burned, fuel saved and greenhouse gas emissions kept out of the atmosphere.

I’m still digging through the site, but my initial impression is a good one; the safety tips are comprehensive, and keeping the mileage (and saved gas) numbers climbing seems like it could be good motivation for people trying to make the bicycle a larger part of their transportation plans.

I log my commuting miles on a different site so I won’t be using this one. However, I wanted to relate my commuting experience yesterday. I live in east Dayton and work in Area B of the Base. It’s a mile and half from my house to the T-connector. I took the connector to just before Springfield street and then took side streets to the Woodman Overpass. I crossed Springfield and rode on sidewalks and a side street till I came to the rode that crosses Springfield and goes into the Museum. I can’t go any further on side streets so I waited for a break in traffic and rode a half mile to the gate. Our office had a picnic at Bass Lake in Area C. I exited the gate and turned right on Springfield, went under the railroad overpass (the worst part), went up the hill and then got on the bikeway to Fairborn, worked my way to gate 1C and then rode to Bass Lake. On the way back I took essentially the same route. However, the National Road gate was open so I entered there, avoiding SR 444, and exited gate 1C. A total of 36 miles in warm weather, but good exercise.
