Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Bike commuting: a broader view

A few days ago, a colleague asked me how my bike-commuting related posts were received by blog readers. It’s an important question, as blogs live or die by reader interest, regardless of topic.

But it’s tricky to measure; I can tell how many people visit the blog each day, but can’t track which entries they read, or how long they spend reading them.

I’ve had some indications that bike commuting is a timely topic, though. Several readers have posted questions and comments about their experiences swapping cars for bikes, and I’ve had a handful of people mention in person that the blog has inspired them to get on their bikes more often.

A recent CNN story provided another sign that bike commuting is a noteworthy topic. Read it here, and share your thoughts on the article.

But one of my goals is to keep this blog local, and that’s where you come in. Have you tried going by bike instead of car? Are the environmental aspects of transportation important topics to you? Have you changed your driving habits due to gas prices, or perhaps due to concerns about air quality? Share your thoughts here.

Matt, I heard lots of people reading your blogs. For some personal reasons, most good readers do not post anything. My ultimate goal is to ride to work, I got vetoed by the love ones b/c of danger - over 90% no safe adequate shoulders or sidewalk to ride on. But in afterwork it’s a different story. I ride my bicycle everywhere…to meetings, church, parks, entertainment, farmer’s market, eateries and visit friends.

When gas went to $3.00/gallone last year, I began riding my bike to much more. It’s too bad that our Greene County Engineer doesn’t see any value of using bike for transportation. Most of our county roadways do not have berm to allow safe riding.
