Scapes and tomatoes
Since today is farmers’ market day in West Chester Twp, I thought it would be fitting to say a few words about garlic scapes.
Say again?
I had a similar first reaction last weekend, when I spotted the curly green things in a jar at one of the farmers’ marked booths. Scapes are the above-ground shoots of garlic bulbs, I learned, and like their under-bits, you can cook with them.
I took home a handful, and indeed they cook up quite well; they have a milder flavor than garlic bulbs and worked really well sauteed and stir-fried with chicken (local chicken, from another market vendor - good stuff!).
I’d have never heard of scapes had I gone shopping at the big box instead of the farmers’ market. Hmmm…
In other news, I was elated Thursday when I noticed one of my tomato plants starting to bud. As a novice to growing my own produce, I haven’t had the highest expectations for myself or my little porch garden. The tenacious tomatoes, however, are doing just fine without my input, thank you very much. I provide the water, and watch as they do what nature intended them to do.
It’s nice to know that in this little quest to grow my own food, I’m not relying entirely on my own knowledge and instincts.
