Happy Earth Day!
Happy Earth Day!
Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…
So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?
Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?
A time to call for more action?
Or something in-between?
Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Give your old phones a home
In response to my request for people to tell me about local “green” businesses or programs, I received an email from a contact at Verizon Wireless. I haven’t had a chance to cross-check the exact stats listed below, but the general idea of finding ways to recycle quickly outdated tech products is valid, especially given the amount of toxic chemicals in a typical computer.
I suspect there are other tech recycling programs through other service providers. Do you know about any? If so, let me know and I’ll get the word out.
Here’s the email:
“Most people don’t think to recycle technology items, but as you can see it can really go along way in helping our environment.
RECYCLE: Donate it to victims of domestic violence: Verizon’s Hopeline program accepts wireless phones and equipment, regardless of condition or service provider. With funds raised from the sale of refurbished phones, Verizon donates wireless phones, airtime, and funding to nonprofit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the nation. Any Verizon Wireless store serves as a drop-off location.
REUSE as an emergency phone: By converting your old phone onto a pre-paid plan, you can put these old phones into your car or home as ‘back-up’ in case of an emergency. With Verizon Wireless’ INpulse plan, there are no term contracts or deposits, only pay when you actually need to use the minutes.
REDUCE environmental e-waste: Recycling cell phones leads to significant environmental savings. In addition to keeping valuable materials out of landfills and incinerators, recycling just 1 million cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road for a year.”
