Some reading for E-week | Living Green

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Some reading for E-week

With Earth Day falling on Tuesday, I perused the magazine rack at West Chester Library to see who’s taking the cue to provide a little extra “green” coverage. One issue caught my eye, and provided some interesting reading in an unlikely spot:

Autoweek magazine.

No, I did not miss the irony of reading enviro-friendly articles in a magazine usually devoted to high-revving horsepower, but I have a confession.

Deep down, I’m a bit of a car geek. Thank my grandfather, the antique car collector. When my heart rate rises while cycling to work, there’s a little 10W-30 pumping in my veins.

The articles in Autoweek’s Earth Day issue did provide some food for thought for those of us caught between the love of the planet and that of the open road. A review of the Trek Portland commuter-specific road bike caught my eye. As a one-time bike shop employee, I can attest it’s a very nice, though slightly pricey, way to get to the office. The carbon fork alone justifies a test ride, so you can see the lovely aluminum fittings up close.

The story that really got me thinking, though, was back in the “racing” department. The American LeMans Series is instituting a number of rules aimed at promoting more eco-friendly propulsion in its endurance races. One of its classes has been dominated by Audi’s diesel prototypes, and now the sanctioning body is trying to get biofuels and hybrids into the on-track mix. Whether this is a major case of greenwashing or a legitimate attempt to spur development of high-performance clean transportation remains to be seen, but I look forward to seeing the results.

If nothing more, my car guy half will feel less guilty about drooling over the cars.
