Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Trustees talk green at board meeting

Energy conservation efforts came up during last night’s West Chester Twp. trustee meeting. During a pre-meeting work session, trustees asked about the energy efficiency of the new West Chester Library building, slated for construction this year. Art Hupp, representative for project architect Glaserworks, said the design would not seek LEED certification, but that he expects it could obtain high marks for its use of local building materials and natural light.

Trustee Lee Wong used his time for end-of-meeting comments to come back to the idea of greening the township’s buildings…

“West Chester is a new community,” he said. “I’d like to see us take a leading role in becoming green/environmentally friendly.” He suggested looking into wind, geothermal and solar power as ways to reduce the township’s carbon footprint, but didn’t mention any specific plans.

Trustee Catherine Stoker had similar things to say during her comments. “Being environmentally smart is good business. Anything we can do to reduce energy use saves money,” she said. “It all ends up saving money in the long run - it’s smart.”

So what does hearing comments like these from elected officials mean? Will we see West Chester grow greener in the future, or are the comments simply comments? What do you think?

This was not just talk, you hope that West Chester can become more green, and combining with our bike and walking trails, West Chester can become a beacon for Ohio, and strive to be the best when it comes to the environment.
