Lakota reminds parents of flu plans
There has been plenty of confusion about the H1N1 flu virus and regular flu. Flu shots are out right now for the regular flu and H1N1 shots should be available next month. Even doctors aren’t sure what the procedure will be for those shots. My doctor said he expects to get them, but there are no guarantees at this point. So, in the mean time, here is what Lakota is recommending to parents and staff.
“Dear Lakota Parents and staff, We want to update you on our HINI planning and procedures. At this point, any student showing flu-like symptoms will be asked to wear a mask and if at all possible, sit in an area that is not populated with other students until the parent can pick him or her up. Parents are being asked to keep children home until the child’s fever has subsided for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. In addition we are asking family members of sick students to monitor their own temperatures until their student returns to school. Presently two types of tests may be done in a doctor’s office and hospitals for influenza or the seasonal flu. By far the most common test being used is for Type A influenza. There is also a test for HINI that is very rarely being administered. Any student who tests positive for type the A influenza is said to have presumptive HINI. At this time we are beginning to see more flu like symptoms in our students. Our procedure moving forward in case we have parent reported Presumptive or probable cases will be to send a letter home to all parents in the school where the case has been reported. Parents, if your student has a presumptive or probable case, please report it to the school nurse. We are advising students to remain diligent about good habits, such as covering their cough or sneeze with a tissue and disposing of it immediately after, washing their hands with soap and water frequently and using hand sanitizer when soap and water are not immediately available. Additionally, custodians and building staff are more frequently sanitizing common touch points in addition to their regular cleaning in our buildings. We will continue to work with our area health officials to keep our students safe. If you have any questions, please contact your principal or school nurse. More information is on the web at lakotaonline.com.”
