Contracts

So, you have probably heard by now that Lakota is in contract negotiations with its teachers. While neither side will talk of the specifics, due to the confidentiality of negotiations, last night, more than 300 teachers attended the board meeting wearing black shirts and red buttons.

There are quite a few angry comments on the story post. I want to make a few clarifications to some of those in defense of the staff. One person said the superintendent makes $300,000 a year. That is not true. Mike Taylor makes a third of that. His job, is essentially CEO of the state’s seventh largest school district. Another person wrote that teachers don’t have their Master’s degrees. According to the most recent State Report card where Lakota was ranked Excellent with distinction, 64.1 percent of Lakota teachers have their Master’s degree and the state average is 58.8 percent. Another person wrote Lakota teachers only work part time. While I think you will find that yes teachers have summers essentially off, these teachers are by no means part time. Also, while the average Lakota salary is in the $50,000’s, not all teachers make that.
