Tough times or faulty system?
Check out these stories from the Findlay Courier. (My home town in case anyone is wondering about the connection.) I am wondering about the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission. It seems that when schools get tagged for these funds, it takes this mad dash to the polls to try to convince voters to pass a levy. If the district can’t get the issue to pass, it loses out. What do you think of this system? I am wondering if there would be a better way? The first link here is my home town school. I think area residents paid a pretty penny to put a special issue on the ballot only to see if fail by 11 votes. It is tough economic times right now and voters are uncertain. In my opinion, I think if the state is going to promise the money to the districts, it shouldn’t be a one time option. If I was in charge — and I am not, so it doesn’t matter what I think — I would allow the districts to hold those funds in a building account, allowing them to earn interest. When the community was ready, then it could begin the process of acquiring funds for the projects. Also, the system would not punish fast-growing districts. I am by no means an expert on this topic, but I have noticed quite a few flaws since I began covering education. Any thoughts?
