BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!
In case you haven’t noticed, Lakota students are back in school today. Traffic was definitely heavier with everyone on the road this morning. I dropped into the new East Freshman building, and students were picking up their schedules. The atmosphere was definitely charged with excitement. I am heading over to West to see the new renovations. I will be interviewing some Lakota East jazz students that made it into the state honor band, and I may just head to one of the elementary school buildings for lunch.
What kinds of back-to-school stories would you like to see? I would love to hang out at a bus stop for the first day of kindergarten? Any takers?

Parents who host
I heard a parent called a local radio station to say she was providing alcohol and condoms to Lakota students at her house party. First, I can’t imagine a parent calling to confess such a thing, but what if it was true?
The West Chester Twp. police and Butler County Sheriff’s deputies tell me that parents host parties more often that we would think. My first reaction: What kind of a parent would knowingly allow their child to break the law and then enable his or her friends to do it also? My second reaction: What kind of parent would allow his or her children to attend a party where such things were happening?
To be fair, I am not yet a parent. Also, I ran with a crowd in high school that did not drink. My parents “hosted” drug and alcohol free gatherings at our home specifically because they could keep an eye on things. I belonged to a drug and alcohol prevention group at my school and actively worked to promote safety.
That was in my home. However, some people I talked to about this issue said their parents felt it was better to let them drink at home than to go out drinking. Some parents would rather have their children having protected sex in a safe environment than out somewhere else on prom night. Some parents figured their children needed to get the partying out of their system in high school so they wouldn’t go nuts in college.
What are your thoughts? The law is clear. The police will prosecute parents who host as well as the underage drinkers. While their is no law against minors having sex, perhaps they would have clearer minds about their actions if they weren’t drinking.
I know people feel passionately about this topic, and I would love to get your thoughts. Obviously, my stance is against such gatherings. Bring on the counter arguments.
