Lakota journalists rocking it!

I recently came across a Newspaper Association of America article about high school journalists.

It says students who work on high school newspapers and yearbooks get better grades in high school, earn higher scores on the ACT and get better grades as college freshmen.

Apparently, these results came from the NAA’s research study.

Lakota has been bringing home awards in the journalism field. Check out the results below.

LAKOTA STUDENTS WIN JOURNALISM AWARDS

The first Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA) state convention was held at Kent State with 400 attending the conference. Georgia Dunn, Journalism Education Association state director for Ohio, announced the results of Ohio’s Journalist of the Year competition. Garnering first place was Sarah Massey of Lakota East High School (Liberty Township). Also recognized were runners-up Sara Dorn of Lakota West High School (West Chester) and Graylyn Roose of Lakota East High School (Liberty Twp.). Honorable mention went to DeDe Pan of Lakota East High School (Liberty Twp.). Massey’s portfolio has been forwarded the national contest in Anaheim, CA, in two weeks. The top three portfolio winners will receive scholarships.

SARAH MASSEY WINS JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Ohio Journalism Education Association announced Sarah Massey is the 2008 Journalist of the Year. Sarah is the co-chief editor of Spark, the Lakota East student newspaper. Sarah received $1500 from the state association and will now be in the running for the national award and the $7500 first prize.
