TweetFairmont’s Waterman works her way back into rotation
By Dave Long Contributing Writer
Eight minutes of play is not a good test to see how well Fairmont’s Makayla Waterman has mended from ACL surgery.
But all indications during and after the Firebirds’ 58-50 win over Centerville on Jan. 4 are she is ready to go.
The 6-foot-2 Waterman is ranked the No.1 sophomore in Ohio and No. 14 in nation by Hoopgurlz.com. She is on the recruiting radar of all the top women’s basketball programs in the country because of her exceptional skills.
Last June she torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee during a 3-on-3 scrimmage at the University of Tennessee’s camp. Ironically, Fairborn’s Brooklyn Pumroy had the same injury on her right knee the same weekend while in a tournament at Vanderbilt University, also in Tennessee.
They were both operated on June 28. Pumroy, a 5-foot-8 senior guard who has signed with Marquette, came back on Dec. 27 in a Fairborn win over Beavercreek.
“Brooklyn really helped me get through this,” said Waterman. “We’d text or talk all the time about how we were doing, what happened in rehab and how we felt.
“It was nice to know there was someone out there who was going through the same thing.”
Waterman came into the Centerville game with 4:10 left in the first period to a loud round of applause from the Fairmont fans. She only touched the ball twice and was appeared tentative while running or making cuts.
“I’ve gone hard in practice, but that’s different than a game,” she said. “I hesitated a little the first couple of times up and down the floor just to see how the knee felt.
“After I made a couple of cuts, everything felt fine.”
Her first points came at 4:25 in the second quarter. She got the ball on left side of the lane and made a hard spin move to her right. She got the basket, was fouled and made the free throw.
“That move really gave me confidence because I was able to plant and take it hard to the basket with someone one me,” she said. “I moved my knee and there was no pain. So I got more aggressive after that.”
Waterman ended up with five points and four rebounds playing a little over eight minutes.
Fairmont coach Tim Cogan had huddled with Waterman’s parents and Dr. Jim Klosterman, who operated on Makayla. The plan was to play her two minutes a quarter vs. Centerville. That playing time should increase Saturday, Jan. 7 vs. Vandalia Butler and steadily in games thereafter.
“I thought she looked good for her first time out,” said Cogan. “It’ll be a game to game decision as to how much she plays. But it’s nice to have her back in the lineup.”
Her return to lineup comes in time for Fairmont’s biggest challenges of the regular season at the Classic in the Country showcase Saturday, Jan. 14 and Sunday, Jan. 15. The event is held at Berlin Hiland High School in the eastern part of the state.
On the 14th, Fairmont faces Twinsburg at approximately 6:45 p.m. It is a rematch of the Division I state championship game last March won by Twinsburg, 55-42. Twinsburg is currently ranked No. 3 in the state in the Ohio Girls Basketball Report rating. Fairmont is No. 8.
Twinsburg is led by 6-5 Malina Howard who has signed with Maryland. She had 20 points and 11 rebounds in the state title game.
On the 15th, the Firebirds get No. 2 Canton McKinley at approximately 8:45 p.m. McKinley’s top player is 5-8 guard Ameryst Alston who was Ohio Ms. Basketball last season. She is headed for Ohio State.
