Trotwood 42, Avon 28; final
MASSILLON - Isreal Green elevated his game to the spectacular by scoring a record six touchdowns to lead Trotwood-Madison to a 42-28 defeat of Avon in the Division II high school state football championship Friday night at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.
Green’s TDs were an all-time, all-division state title game record, as were his 326 yards rushing. That surpassed the D-II state title game rushing record held by none other than Chaminade Julienne’s Javon Ringer, who went for 251 when the Eagles won the 2002 title. Green had four TDs and 229 yards rushing at halftime,
Trailing by 21, Avon bunched two scores to pull within seven midway through the fourth quarter. Trailing 28-7 at one point, the Eagles’ comeback is reminiscent of last week when Columbus Marion-Franklin rallied from a 40-16 halftime deficit yet lost to Trotwood, 47-44.
Green answered that with his fourth short TD run.
Green dashed 38 untouched yards on 4th-and-1 with 6:22 left in the third quarter for his fifth score. That tied him with two others for the most TD in a title game, all divisions.
The junior running back scored his fourth TD, a 4-yard run, with just 0:31 left in the half to deflate the undermanned Eagles. The Rams (14-0) scored 28 unanswered points after trailing 7-0.
Avon (13-1) struck just 20 seconds after Green’s fourth score when Justin O’Rourke fired a 17-yard TD pass to Jacob Mullins. The quick strike was set up by a nifty 43-yard hook-and-ladder play that fooled the Rams.
Green tallied his third touchdown, a 1-yarder, with 8:10 left in the half to put Trotwood up 20-7.
Green, apparently stopped near the sideline, instead spun off several would-be tacklers and dashed 74 yards for his second score.
He also set up his own 1-yard touchdown run with a 54-yard gallop on the play before to pull Trotwood within 7-6 midway through the first quarter.
Green was unstoppable, especially in the first quarter when he rushed for 173 yards.
Ralph Smith returned a deflected pass 67 yards for a touchdown to give Avon a 7-0 lead. Rams quarterback Michael Simpson fired toward Dalin Bird, but Smith tipped the pass forward and then snared it and raced untouched to score.
Earlier today Kirtland defeated Coldwater 28-7 to win the D-V state title and Youngstown Mooney beat Springfield Shawnee 21-14 for the D-III title.
The Divisions I, IV and VI title games are Saturday.

TweetBrewer expected to be Troy’s head football coach
TROY - Scot Brewer is expected to be named the head football coach at Troy High School.
Brewer, a 1994 Troy grad, has been an assistant with the Trojans and was the team’s defensive coordinator the past four years. He’ll replace longtime Troy coach Steve Nolan, who resigned last month after 28 years as the Trojans’ head coach.
The school board will review Brewer’s recommendation at its Dec. 12 meeting. Principal Ron Phillis and athletic director Jeff Sakal jointly submitted their proposal of Brewer to superintendent Eric Herman on Friday.
“Scot has a great passion and love for the game and for coaching,” said Troy athletic director Jeff Sakal. “(He) is a terrific coach and will be a great ambassador and leader for our football program.”
Prior to joining the Trojans’ staff, Brewer previously coached at St. Charles and Thomas Worthington, both Columbus schools.
Brewer is the older brother of record-setting Troy running back Ryan Brewer, Ohio’s Mr. Football in 1998. Troy was 8-3 this past season and advanced to the Division I, Region 3 playoffs in 2010-11.
Troy’s is the first of four head football coach openings in the Greater Western Ohio Conference to be filled. West Carrollton, Miamisburg and Springfield also all need new head coaches following resignations.

TweetKirtland 28, Coldwater 7; D-V state football final
MASSILLON - Coldwater has set its share of high school football records and on Friday the Cavaliers regrettably snatched another.
Coldwater dropped its third straight state championship football game, this time a 28-7 setback to unbeaten Kirtland for the Division V title at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. That’s the most consecutive championship losses by a team since the playoffs began in 1972.
This was the first of six state final games this weekend at Stark County. At 3 p.m. today Springfield Shawnee (14-0) plays Youngstown Mooney (10-3) for the D-III title at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium. Also, Trotwood-Madison (14-0) plays Avon (13-1) for the D-II title at 7 p.m. also at Massillon.
The Divisions I, IV and VI finals are Saturday.
It was the first time in program history that Kirtland (15-0) was playing for a state championship. Coldwater (11-4) also lost to Youngstown Ursuline 51-21 in last season’s D-V final and 55-25 to to Ursuline in 2009.
Mogador (2002) and Newark Catholic (1982) are the only teams to have dropped two straight state title games, then won the third year.
“We talk about winning the last game and unfortunately we didn’t do it again,” Coldwater coach Chip Otten said.
“As a head coach you always want to say at least one time that you won a state championship. Hopefully, it’ll come and it may never come. That’s certainly not why you coach, I guess.”
The Cavs never could stop Kirtland running backs Christian Hauber and Damon Washington, who each scored twice. Hauber, a senior who’s headed to the Air Force Academy to play, rushed for 196 yards. Washington went for 147, which included an 81-yard TD romp.
Kirtland had 410 yards rushing and just 10 passing, but didn’t need any more because the Cavs never could stop the run.
“(Hauber) brought it hard every time,” Cavs’ defensive tackle Alex Grieshop said. “He’s very tough to bring down.”
Cavs quarterback Austin Bruns completed 18 of 34 passes for 249 yards, but he overthrew at least three open receivers that could have resulted in long scoring plays.
“We were just off on a few plays and those things happen,” Otten said. “You can’t do that against a good team and they’re a very, very good team.”
Cavs senior Aaron Mestemaker had six catches for 94 yards.
Kirtland’s shutdown defense allowed just 70 yards rushing. Its first unit gave up just 41 points this season.
Washington bolted 81 untouched yards down the sideline for his second score with just 4:10 left to clinch Kirtland’s win.
Coldwater drove to Kirtland’s 12 with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter, but stalled when Bruns’ fourth-down pass was incomplete. Washington struck with his long run on Kirtland’s following possession on third down.
Bruns scored on a 6-yard run to pull the Cavs within 14-7 in the final minute of the third quarter. Kirtland responded with a 5-yard scoring run from Hauber.
Washington scored on a 7-yard run with just 10 seconds left before halftime to push Kirtland’s lead to 14-0 at halftime.
The game drew 6,662 spectators. Coldwater is 145-23 since 2000, the most wins in that time for any school in the state. It also was their fifth title games in the last seven seasons. They have won twice.
