Trotwood-Madison 47, Col. Marion-Franklin 44; final

CLAYTON - Cameron Burrows raced 80 yards with an interception and Eric Cospy converted a 35-yard extra-point kick in what proved to be the winning score as Trotwood-Madison defeated Columbus Marion-Franklin 47-44 in Friday night’s Division II high school football state semifinals at Northmont’s Good Samaritan Stadium.

The win puts T-M in next Friday’s D-II state title game against Avon, a 43-20 winner over Aurora in the other D-II semi.

M-F faced a fourth down and 21 at Trotwood’s 25 when Burrows picked off a flea-flicker and scored the game winner.

Joe Alverson scored his third touchdown n a 28-yard pass from Corry Benson as Marion-Franklin pulled within 47-44 with 2:53 left.

Benson heaved a 17-yard scoring pass to Darien Williams as Marion closed to 40-38. The Red Devils regained possession when punter Dalin Byrd barely fielded a high snap and fell on the ball at Trotwood’s 27.

Benson cashed in with a 1-yard scoring dash following Da’Shawn Thorpe’s 79-yard reception on fourth down and Benson followed with an 85-yard TD strike to Jaron Dukes for his second TD reception as Marion-Franklin pulled within 40-32 as the third quarter ended.

Rams QB Michael Simpson tossed four first-half touchdowns and Marion-Franklin imploded with five turnovers as the Rams raced to a 40-16 halftime lead.

Simpson began with a 45-yard TD strike to wide open Trai Mobley. George “Bam” Bradley returned an interception 62 yards and Israel Green raced 12 yards with a screen pass as Trotwood bunched three touchdowns in less than two minutes of the first quarter to quickly blow open the contest against their Columbus City League foe.

The Red Devils finally answered with a 12-yard TD run by Alverson with 5:41 left in the first quarter.

Trotwood responded with Simpson’s third TD pass, a 28-yard heave to Byrd that was deflected near the goal line.

Simpson went back to Mobley again for a 36-yard scoring strike. Green ended first-half scoring with a 22-yard dash.

Besides Bradley’s first-half pick, Reon Dawson and Romello Crisp also had interceptions. In addition, the Rams recovered two M-F fumbles.

Simpson was red hot in the first half, completing 9 of 13 passes for 171 yards.

Other Friday state semifinals: Coldwater 41, Hicksville 21; final.

One more score from CMF and Mo would have pulled out his ” bad refs” notes for the newpaper. He has a “bad ref” speech prepared before every game and just fills in the new opponents name.

Congratulations to all the Trotwood Rams and coaches on a great win. It just shows how this team never gives up and fights to the end even though there were injuries. Get that trophy next week. Come on out next week everybody and support the Rams for all the hard work they have put in.

Great hard fought win, cracks me up with all the haters,,,those in the so called,Dayton area..The News always wants to put Coldwater , the Lima’s and so on in the paper…and they could give a hoot about dayton or anything in the county …Centerville,Alter,Wayne ..have had their moments ..now try and let Trotwood have their moment, time, and support.

Where’s the local support for a team in your area going to State… Ohio mentality,I guess… Georgia,Florida,Texas.True football fans there. Were teams get support from the community… Everyone here wants Meyers as Coach at Ohio State,,Lets see if they feel that way, with support when he goes after and uses the best players… The local area can’t with their own much less on a state level.
