COLUMBUS — Carroll High School is 20 minutes away from opening defense of its 2010 Division II boys soccer state championship against Richfield Revere at Columbus Crew Stadium.

Carroll beat Revere 3-2 in last season’s state final for the Patriots’ second title in three seasons (2008).

The Patriots (22-0-0) have been ranked No. 1 in the state all season. Revere (18-0-4) is No. 2.

“It’s been a big target on their back but they’ve handled it well,” Carroll coach Scott Molfenter said of the top ranking as well as a 36-game unbeaten streak.

Carroll junior Vonne Byrd, for one, is glad the game is here.

“I can’t even focus on school. It’s in my head. I’m ready to play,” the junior forward said.

Richfield enters today’s game outscoring tournament opponents 14-2. Carroll has outscored tournament opponents 21-1 with freshman Noah Kummer in goal.

“Even though he’s a freshman, he’s learned a lot. I have a lot of faith in him,” Byrd said. “At the beginning I was a little shaky (about his experience) at the open fields, but as the year went on my faith grew. I have full faith in him.”

Teammate Matt Barnes is one of seven seniors on the Patriots’ roster. His brother, Paul, won a state title with Carroll in 2008.

“The experience watching that first one was it’d be so nice getting there myself,” Matt Barnes said. “It’s nice getting there a second time, too.&#8221

HALFTIME UPDATE: Carroll leads Revere 1-0 and is 40 minutes from repeating as the D-II boys soccer state champions.

Junior forward Trae’ Collins scored with 2:37 left in the first half, rolling a low shot inside the far post and past Revere’s diving keeper from 12 yards out. Collins looked like he two-touched the ball after junior midfielder Zach Zwiesler took possession near the top of the circle and dribbled through three Minutemen defenders, the passed the ball past two more to Collins.

It was the fourth solid shot the Patriots had in the final six minutes of the first half. Zwiesler found Collins deep inside the penalty box with 6:06 to play but Collins’ shot went left of the post.

Sophomore forward Quincy Pope hit the far post with 4:51 to play and Collins fired wide inside the penalty box with 3:41 to go.

SECOND HALF IS UNDERWAY

Carroll continues to put pressure on Revere defense.

35:23 Carroll’s Kummer saves Revere’s first shot on goal. A kick from outside the penalty box Kummer cradles on one bounce.

19:14 to go … Junior defender Patrick Raiff fires high over the cross bar

12:53 to play … Carroll leads 2-0 on Senior Matt Barnes penalty kick. Barnes rolled his kick to his right as Revere’s keeper guessed left. The kick was set up when Carroll’s Patrick Raiff blasted a shot just inside the penalty box that hit the hand of a Revere defender.

Carroll is four minutes away from its second straight D-II title, leading 2-0

3:19 to play … Senior Austin Neumeier gets the ball atop the penalty box arc, fires just inside the cross bar for the 3-0 lead
