What We Learned: Week 6 of the high school football season

A few things we learned from Week 6 of the high school football season:

Staying undefeated: Trotwood-Madison, Tippecanoe, Alter, Fenwick, Waynesville and Covington stayed unbeaten with Friday wins.

GCL North power: The four Greater Catholic League North Division teams (Alter, Carroll, Chaminade Julienne, Fenwick) each beat a GCL Central team on Friday night. Alter and Fenwick remain undefeated, while CJ (4-2) and Carroll (3-3) have steadied after slow starts to their seasons.

Carroll will play Alter and Fenwick will face CJ on Friday.

Trotwood can come back: Before Friday night, the Rams had scored their fewest points and faced their closest game in a 35-21 Week 1 defeat of Thurgood Marshall. Then, against Piqua, Trotwood needed a final drive and a score with 14 seconds left to win 26-23.

Trotwood, which led 19-10 at halftime, gained 437 yards to Piqua’s 238 but also had 144 penalty yards to Piqua’s 29.

Beavercreek making defensive noise: The Beavers started the season 3-2 but have struggled in the GWOC Central Division in recent years. Starting divisional play, Beavercreek held GWOC leading passer Cameron Belton to 96 yards on 16-of-33 passing and grabbed four interceptions in a 15-7 defeat of Northmont.

The win was the Beavers’ second in their past 16 divisional games. They get another test when they host Wayne (which has scored 47 points in each of the past two games) on Friday.

SWBL balance: The SWBL’s top teams saw a strong mix of offense and defense as plenty of good records were upheld. Eaton (5-1, 3-0) and Bellbrook (3-3, 2-0) stayed undefeated in the Southwestern Division by allowing 0 and 7 points in wins against Monroe and Valley View. Combined, Eaton and Bellbrook have three shutouts in their past four games, and they’ll meet on Friday.

Milton-Union (5-1, 2-0 Buckeye) and Brookville (5-1, 1-1 Southwestern) showed offensive prowess with 31 and 48 points in wins against Carlisle and Oakwood.

In all, five SWBL teams: Waynesville (6-0), Eaton (5-1), Brookville (5-1), Franklin (5-1) and Milton-Union (5-1) are 5-1 or better.

Xenia putting up a fight: The Buccaneers averaged 12.3 points in their first four games but have scored 26 points (47-36 loss to Wayne) and 32 points (32-7 defeat of Lebanon) in their past two games. Lebanon entered 3-2, which made it a solid win for Xenia.

But, can it continue? The Buccaneers host Trotwood on Friday night.

Top Week 7 games

Eaton (5-1, 3-0) at Bellbrook (3-3, 2-0): Only one team will remain unbeaten in the SWBL Southwestern Division.

Carroll (3-3, 2-1) at Alter (6-0, 3-0), at Centerville High School: Carroll has won two straight by allowing 0 and 7 points, and Alter enters No. 2 in the state D-III poll.

Fenwick (6-0, 3-0) at Chaminade Julienne (4-2, 3-0), at West Carrollton Middle School: CJ has won four straight, but Fenwick averages 48 points per game

Wayne (3-3, 1-0) at Beavercreek (4-2, 1-0): The Beavers get a second straight home game against a GWOC Central Division stalwart. Can their momentum continue?

Piqua (3-3, 0-1) at Troy (5-1, 1-0): The state’s longest-running football rivalry comes after Piqua took undefeated Trotwood to the wire and Troy remained No. 1 in the DDN D-I ratings.

Lebanon must be bad because Xenia sucked vs. Beavercreek and Wayne. Trotwood may put a 100 on them

We (Miamisburg parents) learned what we know oh so well. It is time to remove our entire coaching staff and start new. The head coach needs to go and all of the lazy assistants. The kids are being cheated by these lazy coaches that do not care and only continue to make excuses instead of coaching. Practices are nothing but b/s sessions about “tradition and I remember when I played” The only tradition we are making now is how to win 1-2 games a year and these guys steal a paycheck. 4 wins in the last 2 1/2 years and these coaches are still here? Only shows that school administration doesn’t care also. We as parents need to address this issue and demande better for our kids.

I learned that Alter’s Malik Zaier can throw the ball! He led an amazing come from behind victory over McNicholas. Then made a recruiting trip to Wisconsin yesterday. Will he be the 4th Alter player on the Badgers roster?

Wayne is 3-3 (1-0) and Beavercreek is 4-2 (1-0)…C’mon Nagel get your facts straight before you post articles.

Hey Enough, heard you guys were starting a petition. There was enough talk Friday in the stands to get alot of names signed. Count us in, we’ll sign. We’ve seen enough also.

Enough already, I agree 100% with what you are saying. They have the same coaching staff they have had for what 10 years ? The program is going nowhere until they clean house and bring in someone that knows what needs to be done and can make the correct decisions and stop the buddy ball.

Hey Amen, I see some big problems myself, but please tell us what buddy ball is? I see kids being switched out all the time and little continuity because of it. Unless your talking about them not playing underclassmen? If that is the case, they still wouldn’t be doing anything!

They will not play underclassmen but cry every year about “being young”. It is the same thing every week every year. Same mistakes and they never fixed. All they have are ex players from bad teams so how can they teach these kids anything. Lewis surrounds himself with buddies and players that he played and shouldn’t have. He left and came back to “fix” the program. Well he is 3 - 13 since his return. Kline was 1-9 also so where’s the change? Great job! This is a mess and until we gut these coaches it is not going to change. The administration doesn’t care also.

Buddy ball is when they( the coaches and former teammates from back in the day) play thier kids or the position coaches play a kid all the time, not because they are good but because they like them personally and the rest of the team suffers because of it.

Buddy ball has been around forever and is alive & well in the Burg. If your daddy played no matter how bad his kid is he will play. It will never change until we remove this loser head coach and his explayer coaching staff.

Loved the flea flicker on 3rd & 13. Nice punt blocking also. Same mistakes every week , every year. Oh well, only 3 more to go until we hear the same old excuses next year.

The sad part about the punt blocking was that they only rushed 3 and all three made it thru

Week 8 looked a lot like all the rest of the weeks. This is getting sooooo old. Same stupid mistakes, same excuses every year. This team shows no heart, no hustle, no direction and worse no desire. They are a direct reflection on their coaching staff. These kids deserve better.

Let’s see. leading by 7 at 1/2. Don’t score in the 2nd half and give up 31 points? Who made adjustments and who got out coached again? My my my, what a mess.
