Beavers get physical with Patriots; improve to 2-0

Gone is the funky hyper version of the wing-T, misdirection offense.

In is a smash-mouth brand of off-tackle, with a heavy dose of senior running back Zach Smith.

The result is as good as hoped for at Beavercreek, which shot to 2-0 following Friday’s convincing 23-12 win at Carroll.

“We just needed to get more physical,” beamed coach Scott Clotfelter. “This is a physical team right now.”

The Beavers hardly resemble last year’s 1-9 team. That was evident from their physical play, especially on defense.

The Beavers made a believer of Patriots coach Bob Levy.

“I felt going in that they were as good as they were two years ago,” said Levy, a longtime Carroll assistant who took over when Steve Bartlett resigned last spring after 16 seasons as Carroll’s head coach.

“Athletically, they’re a lot better than last year. The only thing I can hope for at this point is that return the favor next year just like we did last year.”

Clodfelter is in his eighth season as the Beavers’ head coach. The program was consistently competitive until it unraveled last season. Now, hopes are high again.

“That was a really great win for us,” Clodfelter said. “I thought our kids played really hard and smart.

“I’m thrilled for the seniors. It was important for us to win early and we did. I can’t be more proud of our team. The guys did a wonderful job and it doesn’t get any easier. Winning this game in this environment doesn’t get any better.”
