Northmont’s Jared Walker passes the grade; 2 up on brother Javon

DAYTON - Who’s faster, Javon or Jared Walker?

“Depends on what we’re talking about,” said Jared, Northmont’s senior sprint sensation following Friday’s Division I track and field regional at Welcome Stadium.

“If it’s the 400, obviously him, but anything under that, I got him.”

Jared went two up on his older brother - 2009 grad Javon - by winning the regional 100 (10.97) and 200 meters (21.71). That means he’ll be among the favorites at next week’s season-ending state track meet at OSU’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. He was fifth in the D-I state 100 last season.

Javon, now running at Kent State, was fifth in the state 400 as a senior.

The Walkers should have been running together back in 2009. Instead, Jared was ineligible, derailed by inattention to academics. He missed all of his freshman and sophomore seasons because of low grades.

He plans to enter junior college, then transfer to a college track power.

Coach Tony Broering couldn’t find a place for Jared once he became eligible last year. Sensitive of being compared to Javon, Jared tried field events and other distances before finding his sprint niche.

“My grades were horrible the past four years,” Jared said. “A lot of times it’s best not to live and learn, but some people got a little bit of a hard head. In my case it was my grades, so I had to live and learn through that.

“For me, it’s going through high school and taking academics more seriously. I learned and it’s time to move on.”

If he is to pull off that double again next week, he’ll have to have a better 100 start. Left in the blocks, Jared was still last at 50 meters, then rocketed to the front to edge William Herman of Cin. St. Xavier.

It was all turbo in the 200 for Jared, who bolted to the early lead and held on.

“I don’t want to get too big a head about (winning), but I’m enjoying the moment,” he said.

Northmont in no way, shape or form can compare to the Dunbar Wolverines Track Team Antonio Blanks and the best coach in track, Sidney Booker will dominate the state tournament. Go Wolves, Go Roger Williamson, keep DPS, best track league in Ohio.
