Bartlett, Helms, Place among Springfield head coach applicants
Former Carroll head coach Steve Bartlett and a couple of former Chaminade Julienne head coaches - Andy Helms and Jim Place - are among those who have applied for the open football head coach position at Springfield High School.
The Wildcats job opened when Rick Robertson resigned after three seasons last month to be the head coach at Oakwood.
Springfield AD Mike Stoll released a list of 29 applicants on Friday and hopes to have a new coach by June 1.
“There are some quality candidates on there,” Stoll said.
“The (search) committee’s got a large task to select the best fit for Springfield.”
Bartlett was coach of the Patriots for 16 seasons before resigning after last season. His interest shouldn’t be a surprise: He came to Carroll after a successful run at Southeastern in nearby South Charleston and is a Springfield Northeastern grad.
Helms was CJ’s coach the last five seasons following a successful stint at East Clinton. He has since been replaced by former Eagles assistant Marcus Colvin.
Place started his head coaching career at Springfield Northwestern and led the Warriors to a rare winning season in the late 1970s. He has since been the head coach at Beavercreek, Stebbins, Middletown, CJ and most recently Hamilton, where he resigned after five years following the 2009 season.
Complete list of applicants: Steve Bartlett; Morgan Cotter (Fairbanks head coach); Danny Dellapina, James Dimitroff (former Springfield North head coach); Brock England, Christopher English; Steve Evans (former Reynoldsburg head coach); Tokia Fant; Mark Fikalkowski; Larry Getts; Eric Gillespie (Richmond, Ind., head coach); Steve Graves; Jonathan Green; Andy Helms; Bill Hrabak; Jerome Hudnell; Bruce Jones; John Jones; Kristopher Ketron; Tom Phillips; Jim Place; Brian Smith; Conley Smoot; Brian Staats; Adam Taylor; Thomas Thompson; Anthony Thornton; Chris Wallace; Isaac Williams.
