Oakwood baseball coach plans to resign
Oakwood High School baseball coach Nathan Hyatt plans to resign his position after the season ends and informed his team of the decision this week, according to sources. He plans to pursue the football offensive coordinator position at Chaminade Julienne High School. The Eagles promoted defensive coordinator and social studies teacher Marcus Colvin to the head coaching position in April. CJ athletic director Jon Payne said nothing is official with Hyatt’s hiring. Hyatt is expected to meet with CJ officials next week.
TweetVoting and debate continues on OHSAA Competitive Balance Proposal
The OHSAA’s Competitive Balance Proposal has been a major topic of conversation in the world of Ohio high school sports since it was announced in January.
We’ll know the results soon enough.
OHSAA member principals have until Monday, May 16, to return their paper ballots. They will either vote for creating a formula that uses boundary, socioeconomic and tradition factors to increase or decrease a school’s enrollment number, creating an “athletic count” or turn it down.
Results will be announced Tuesday, May 17.
Reporters from throughout Cox Media Group Ohio spent the past several weeks doing dozens of interviews and research into the topic. We produced a five-part series on the proposal, breaking down its path to the vote, its three factors and what is not addressed (mainly, the enrollment disparity in Division I).
If the proposal fails, the issue won’t end. Many believe a referendum item will appear on next year’s ballot through the petition process for vote on separate public and non-public state tournaments.
It’s a key issue in high school sports throughout the country, including Ohio. That’s why everyone associated with prep sports is watching closely.
(For those who don’t call this a public-versus-private issue, here’s a chart the OHSAA produced on which types of schools have won state titles).
