Dunbar 71, Trotwood-Madison 60: Wolverines rewind
KETTERING - Dunbar, the state’s top-ranked Division II team, ran its record to 11-2 with a 71-60 defeat of nonleague rival Trotwood-Madison on Sunday at Fairmont’s Trent Arena.
Here’s what the Wolverines had to say:
Coach Pete Pullen
“My high school coach always told me that when you play a rival, it can get real ugly because it’s so emotional. As a coach, you can’t really do much because the kids take over the game. You just hope that you prepared them well and hope for the best.”
Deontae Hawkins, 6-7 junior center
“We had to turn it on and just play together as a team. I told (Gary) Akbar that it’s got to be your game. The green light was on him.
“It’s a good W because it’s tradition.”
Gary Akbar, 6-5 junior forward
“It was real different. I felt like I had to carry us the first half. I had to literally show up until my other big man showed up and we could finish it off.
“We needed to come out here and make a statement and bounce back after last game.”
That would be a 53-39 setback to Chicago Simeon in Flyin’ to the Hoop, also at Trent Arena last week. Dunbar still hasn’t lost to an Ohio team. Ann Arbor (Mich.) Huron beat the Wolverines in Game 3.
