Fairmont girls 47, Fairborn 38: Skyhawks rewind
It was oh-so-good while it lasted for Fairborn.
The Skyhawks’ girls basketball team suffered its first loss, 47-38 at Fairmont on Monday. Fairborn was the DDN’s top-ranked D-I team and Fairmont No. 2.
Fairborn is at Sidney on Wednesday, then plays two-time defending state D-II champion Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown in Classic in the Country at Berlin Hiland on Monday, Jan. 17.
Fairmont suffered its first loss this past Saturday, 49-44 at Vandalia Butler. Both Fairborn and Fairmont are 9-1.
In Fairborn girls hoop coach Steve Hannaford’s words:
“They may have been looking ahead, but Butler played a great game. Better than I think everybody thought that they would.
“We got behind and dug another hole early. You get behind a good team like this and it’s tough to crawl back.
“We got it down to six at the end and four straight missed free throws, we didn’t get the rebound. You’ve got to have them to come down and score.”
In Fairborn’s Jaymee Veney’s words:
“Obviously, they’re big. I got a few (rebounds), but obviously not enough to count.
“It obviously made us better. We’ve got a lot of things to work on. It obviously made them better coming off a loss. We know that we have to redeem ourselves and just do it up big.
“It was hell, basically. They were big, good and strong and nothing came easy for any of our players. We had to work for everything that we got.”
