Fairmont girls 47, Fairborn 38: Firebirds rewind

Fairmont defeated Fairborn 47-38 Monday night at Trent Arena in a battle of the area’s top-ranked Division I girls basketball teams.

Both teams are now 9-1.

The Firebirds had their unbeaten streak snapped last Saturday at Vandalia Butler, 49-44. That played a big part in their wanting to unload a big dose of payback on the Skyhawks. Expect both of these teams to go deep in the postseason.

Fairmont doesn’t have much time to savor this win. The Firebirds are at Wayne (10-2) on Wednesday.

In Fairmont coach’s Tim Cogan’s words:

“You know, when you have a younger group of kids, they don’t always see the clear picture. Sunday when we got together, there were some eyes that were awoken. They get it now.

“There’s going to be a lot of learning curves with this young group. It meant something for them to win (Monday). I think that they wanted to get back from their poor performance on Saturday. I think they felt horrible and they won this for the team, the coaches, everybody.

“I think learning in any way, sometimes in a negative, is a positive for kids. It hurt and they bounced back and did a wonderful job.”

Cogan on Fairborn: “They’ve got kids who can score any time, so they’re never really out of it. I thought our kids did a great job of defending them. We didn’t give them easy looks early on or throughout.

Cogan on college scouts: “There were a ton of D-I college coaches here.”

In Fairmont’s Makayla Waterman’s words:

“We needed to stop them from going on fast breaks. They love to push it. We knew if we played our good half-court defense - which we did not do well on Saturday - that we would beat them, and that’s what we did.

“We just overlooked Butler, but we were very ready for this game. We took all of our anger out on Fairborn.”

In Fairmont’s Chelsea Welch’s words:

“(Losing to Butler) hurt worse, not the fact that we lost, but that we didn’t play as a team and work together, which is our tradition. This put us back on the mark.

“I know if I’m not on my best game, I can depend on all the bigs to help me and take the pressure off. It helps our flow of offense better, because not all the attention is on one person.

“This is like our little mini state. It sets the tone for rankings in Dayton and let’s people know how good we are. That we are a good team, we just had a mistake on Saturday and that we are still a really good team.”

Officiating was highly suspect, with the usual failed ex-jocks inserting themselves into the game and confusing physicality for ability. It is not about you gentleman, get that through your head to your (albeit small) minds.
