Troy 69, Vandalia Butler 58: Trojans rewind

VANDALIA - Troy might have stumbled out of the blocks, but look who’s winning now.

The Trojans were listing along at 2-3 and lugging a three-game losing streak. But since then Troy has won four straight, including Friday night’s impressive 69-58 defeat of Vandalia Butler.

Losing by four at Sidney was tough enough. Falling by one in OT to Trotwood-Madison (6-0) and by eight to Miamisburg (8-2) was crushing.

Cody May and Lance Carter each tallied 19 points as the Trojans snapped the Aviators’ six-game win streak.

Troy boys hoop coach Tim Miller:

“We had trouble the beginning of the year finding our identity a little bit. I knew we had all the pieces there and we had the potential to be a good team. We just couldn’t get it all going together all at the same time.

“Gradually, week by week, we’ve continued to evolve. We’re getting to where I thought we should have been at the beginning of the year.”

In the Trotwood loss: “We missed 28 out of 41 free throws, too, and to lose by one in overtime is very disheartening.”

Miller on the Carter/May combo: “Our guys do a great job of finding each other. These kids have a feel for each other and they look for each other and make that extra pass and find the open man. It’s something that we preach and something that they buy into.”

In junior Cody May’s words:

“That was our plan, to out-run them because we knew they were kind of big and slow. They had a lot of shooters, too. We knew that we could do it and everyone contributed.

On Carter: “Me and Lance have been playing for as long as I can remember. We just go way back. We’ve just got that chemistry.

“We didn’t have the team chemistry early in the season. It’s definitely clicking now. I think we can get those teams again when we play them.”

In senior Lance Carter’s words:

“That was a big one. After losing to Trotwood, we knew that we had to make a statement coming back into the league. This was a big game for us.

Carter on May and their lethal pairing: “We’ve talked about that and have tried to be that for a long time. We’ve been playing together for a while so it comes naturally. Cody’s a great player and he knocks down the shots when I give it to him.

“We knew we were quicker, but we had to keep a body of (Butler’s 6-8 Taylor) Decker and keep him off the glass. We didn’t do a good job of that in the first half. I think he had seven offensive rebounds in the first half.

“We talked about getting out and pushing it and keeping them tired. They’re not too deep but they are big.

“We’re just trying to put it all together and gel as a team.”

Troy (6-3) host Fairmont (2-7) on Tuesday.
