SOUA instructional classes for baseball, softball umpires
The following is a press release from the Southwestern Ohio Umpires Association:
The Southwestern Ohio Umpires Association will begin instructional classes in early February for individuals interested in becoming baseball and softball officials licensed with the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Classes will be held one day each week for 8 consecutive weeks. (Classes will be held in the Middletown / Franklin area; exact dates, times and location will be determined by mid-January). The course is open to anyone 14 years (and in high school) or older.
The fee for OHSAA certification in either baseball or softball is $135. There is an additional $45 fee for individuals wanting OHSAA certification in both sports.
The class fee includes the cost of the National Federation of High Schools rulebooks, casebooks, umpire’s manual, OHSAA Handbook for Officials and testing, as well as an official’s first year OHSAA registration fees.
The course includes classroom instruction, including situational fieldwork, as well as actual fieldwork for high school baseball and softball pre-season scrimmage games. All instruction and fieldwork is conducted, and overseen, by licensed OHSAA Umpires.
Southwestern umpires work high school boys baseball and girls softball games. Umpires who successfully complete the course will be eligible to umpire games at the junior high, freshman and junior varsity levels for the 2011 season.
Southwestern umpires also work summer league games in baseball and slo-pitch and fast-pitch softball for ASA and USSSA organizations in Butler, Warren, Preble and parts of Hamilton and Montgomery counties.
