Wayne whips Hilliard Davidson; state final next
DAYTON - Like the rest of his teammates, all Wayne’s Seth Stuart wanted was to make the high school football playoffs. But that was no certainty.
“We were on the bubble, but we squeezed in,” said the senior wideout.
“We said we just needed to get in and we’ll do damage.”
The Warriors have done more than that. What began as a finger-biting journey and a barely qualifying No. 8 seed has blossomed into a state title berth. That’s what Wayne earned with a convincing 28-14 doubling of defending Division I state champ Hilliard Davidson on Saturday night at Welcome Stadium in a D-I state semifinal.
Wayne (11-3) will meet Lakewood St. Edward (14-0) in next Saturday’s state final at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium. St. Ed beat Toledo Whitmer 23-13 in the other semi at Massillon.
Wayne was incredibly efficient in dismantling what was regarded as stout and superior defensive team in Davidson. The Warriors ran at will behind senior Anthone Taylor — 26 carries, 182 yards — and got a splendid effort from quarterback Braxton Miller — 12 of 16 passing for 134 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Even more impressive, Wayne scored on all four of its first-half possessions and led 28-7 at halftime over shell-shocked HD.
An exclusive running team, Davidson had attempted just four playoff passes through three games — one was a spike — and was at a loss facing such a big deficit.
“I knew if we did what we were coached to do that we would put up the points fast,” Taylor said.
“I told everybody that we need to score every possession we got.”
Taylor did just that, ripping off an untouched 14-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Wayne scorched HD with 21 second-quarter points that featured a short Miller scoring run and Miller tosses to Jordan Morgan and Marcus Bonner.
“For these kids to pull through and pull together and get this thing, wow,” said Wayne coach Jay Minton, shivering from a water dousing after the game.

It’s great to see Wayne move on to playoffs. It’s an exciting time for the team. My praise go out also to those team members who don’t get in but still continue to cheer on the team members that do play. I don’t have any kids at Wayne but it’s nice to be a part of town like this at this particular moment. Good Luck Warriors!

You Centerville wee elks & Hilliard fans are too ashamed to now admit that you must be able to pass to win. Hilliard was nothing and the only reason they scored was set up on pass plays, dah. There coach wearing shorts to show their toughness backfired as end of game his hands were in his pocket and he was shivering. Centerville and Hilliard basically SUCK with their run style games

You know for a little school in a city of 35,000 Wayne High school may have one of the best sports programs in Ohio. Remember Wayne’s basketball team could have made the finals also if a few jealous basketball coaches hadn’t squealed about a few players moving to Huber Heights. Braxton Miller will make OSU fans smile for the next 4 years…

Congrats to Wayne on their victory. The OHSAA appreciates you and wanted to see high profile QB and OSU recruit in Finals - as it helps the ratings on STO. The game was poorly officiated; missing two Wayne block in the backs and #12WR throwing a punch - just prior to his TD catch. It certainly helped and could have been a factor in the game.Hopefully Wayne will be ready to play in Canton - away from their home - Welcome Stadium.

Outstanding Game for the Warriors. Well played. H Davidson played well but not good enough. Wayne was to much for them. To say the OHSAA wanted a certain team in the finals only shows your ignorance, Congratulations to Wayne for a great victory. Travel North and bring back the Title.

Re: Comment above that Centerville and HD “suck” - then beating them is no accompishment. According to you, Wayne has accomplished nothing. Moron.

Why did the paper say Centerville has been to the state playoffs “twice”? That’s not true! Wayne is the only team in the WOH/GWOC that has will been there “twice”, well Sat that is….

Really, excuses already. You were downright beaten by a much better team. HD is good and deserves to be at the semi-finals, but give credit where credit is due. There were quite a bit of late hit penalties that didn’t get called either against HD. BTW the missed penalties wouldn’t have made a difference, Wayne dominated that first half. As for the location, Wayne had NO SAY in it. There was not a venue in Columbus or midway that was available with turf and seating for at least 8000 except Welcome. If the game was in Columbus, still wouldn’t have changed the outcome. Be proud of your team as they deserve it and quit making excuses.

@HDCatfan As a person who has played many sports and lost and won many, the first thing a team does when the other team beats them soundly is to complain about the officiating. I was there at the game. Wayne was better, plain and simple. HD seemed to try several bush-league “tricks” that didn’t work. The option is great (it eats the clock whilst scoring)…when it works. Wayne stuffed the smaller, less-talented HD team. The better team won, plain and simple. If you want to complaint, don’t. HD, a pretty small and not too fast team, went far. Congrats to them, but Wayne was better.
