Girls Basketball Preview: Carlisle
This is another in a series of capsules previewing area high school basketball for the 2010-11 season:
CARLISLE
Coach: Randy Glover, fourth season (33-31)
2009-10 record: 15-6 (7-5 SWBL Buckeye)
Returning starters
Alexis Murphy, Jr., G, 5-8
Notable
Murphy is the lone returning starter, but she’s a first-team selection in the SWBL Buckeye Division after averaging 14.3 points. Seniors Rachel Smith, Sarah Stamm and Amber Manson team with junior Ally Campbell and sophomore Morgan Thomas, who have varsity experience. “We’ll have a different look to us this season,” Glover said. “Last season, we had 6-foot-1 Donna Holbrook at center and we were able to use her height to our advantage. This time around, we’re mostly 5-8 or 5-9 across the board, so that will change how we’re able to do things.” (John Bombatch contributed to this report).

TweetGirls Basketball Preview: Madison
This is another in a series of capsules previewing area high school basketball for the 2010-11 season:
MADISON
Coach: John Rossi
Returning starters
Ally Malott, Sr., F, 6-3
Ashley Cox, Jr., C, 6-0
Brittany Shields, Jr., F, 6-0 Notable
The Mohawks return plenty from last season’s D-III state finalist team, especially with Malott. The three-time SWBL Buckeye Division player of the year, first-team All-Ohio selection and University of Dayton recruit averaged 17.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. Cox and Shields also started in the state final and give the Mohawks a strong inside presence. Point guard is the early question with the team’s top two ball handlers graduating. TweetGirls Basketball Preview: Waynesville
This is another in a series of capsules previewing area high school basketball for the 2010-11 season:
WAYNESVILLE
Coach: Tim Gabbard, 31st season (429-252)
2009-10 record: 17-6 (10-2 SWBL Buckeye)
Returning starters
Lauren Bunn, Sr. G, 5-6
Amber Bell, Sr., G, 5-3
Hilary Rains, Sr., G, 5-3
Jessica Klan, Jr., F, 5-7
Katelyn Danner, Jr., G, 5-7
Notable
The Spartans are solid again at guard with the return of Bunn and Bell, both all-league selections who averaged 10 and 11 points respectively. Rains, Danner and Hannah Morgan add depth for a team that will rely on speed and quickness, especially with its full-court press. Senior post Maggie Dowe is one of the taller post players at 5-8, so boxing out is key. Chandler Gianattasio and Katie Powers will also see time in the post.

TweetGirls Basketball Preview: Dixie
This is another in a series of capsules previewing area high school basketball for the 2010-11 season:
DIXIE
Coach: Anya Johnsman, second season
2009-10 record: 1-20, (0-12 SWBL Buckeye)
Returning starters
Ciara Bates, Jr., F, 5-11
Katlynn Leiss, Jr., G/F, 5-7
Notable
Two starters return - and no seniors overall - but team cohesion is a strength: Six of the eight varsity players have been teammates since junior high. Building confidence is key coming off that one-win season. In addition to returning starters Bates and Leiss, juniors Stacy Rader, Karley Purcell, Amie Woodgeard and Sherry Myers also bring back experience. “The girls have taken a whole new approach to this season,” Johnsman said. “They are much more disciplined in practice and there is an apparent desire to learn. If the girls continue to push themselves and look ahead, not to the past, then we definitely have the potential to be more successful this year.”

TweetGirls Basketball Preview: Valley View
This is another in a series of capsules previewing area high school basketball for the 2010-11 season:
VALLEY VIEW
Coach: Steve Dickson, 8th season (11th overall, 95-77)
2009-10 record: 8-13 (4-8 SWBL Southwestern)
Returning starters
Brooke Lewis, Jr. F
Marissa Herlinger, Jr., C
Becca Pugh, Jr., G/F
Hannah Collins, So., G/F
Hannah Haeseker, So., G/F
Mallory Wright, Sr., G
Kaitlynne House, Jr., G
Notable
The Spartans return seven players that started at one time or another last season. Wright is the lone senior and is teamed with seven juniors and two sophomores. Turnovers hurt last season and Dickson wants the Spartans to be smarter with the ball to make a run in the division. On the flip side, Valley View looks to be aggressive on defense and force a few turnovers themselves. “Every game is important this year for our program. We want to prove to the other teams in our league that we have improved and will be competitive,” Dickson said. “(We want to) play hard and be competitive in every game, improve every day.”

TweetGirls Basketball Preview: Oakwood
This is another in a series of capsules previewing area high school basketball for the 2010-11 season:
OAKWOOD
Coach: Aaron Oakes, sixth season (75-38)
2009-10 record: 13-9 (8-4 SWBL Southwestern)
Returning starters
Claire Davis, Jr., G, 5-6
Brooke Trauthwein, Sr., F, 6-0
Ellen Smith, Sr., C, 6-3
Elizabeth Haley, So, F, 6-1
Ashton Ehler, Sr., F, 5-8
Kailey Nolan, Sr., F, 5-8
Kelsey Dillon, Sr., G, 5-7
Notable
Davis, Trauthwein, Smith and Haley started the majority of games for the Jills, while Ehler, Nolan and Dillon saw spot starts. That depth - and six seniors — should bode well for Oakwood, which finished third in the league last season. Size - three girls 6-0 or taller will start — and inside play are also strengths and Oakes expects it to present match-up problems for some teams. Guard play is a concern early, especially with Davis still out with a broken leg suffered during soccer season. Oakwood could be Bellbrook’s biggest challenge to the SWBL title. The Jills handed the Eagles their only league loss and led by 20 in the second half before falling in the other meeting. Smith is an Ohio University recruit. “We are expecting to have a great season,” Oakes said. “I think some people are looking for us to struggle early in the season because of the injury to Claire Davis, but we have some seniors who have really stepped up and are filling in that void. If we do achieve the success we are hoping to it will be because of our defense.”

TweetAlter-Hartley football semifinal should last about 45 minutes
I caught Columbus Bishop Hartley football coach Brad Burchfield on his cell phone Tuesday as he was just sitting in the chair to get a haircut.
I joked that he should think about getting a Hartley logo done to celebrate his team’s appearance in the Division IV state semifinals.
“We’re not too flashy,” Burchfield said. “That wouldn’t fly.”
Between Alter (11-2) and Hartley (11-2), Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal at Piqua High School should be about as flashy as a construction worker’s wardrobe. Between them, the teams average 644.5 rushing yards per game with powerful rushing attacks.
In the reporting world, covering games with heavily running teams often means more time to work before deadline because the games end quickly. With these two, as much as they run, the game might end while some are still waiting in traffic to get in.
Alter is led by senior QB Zane Pitzer (1,208 yards, 15 TDs) and senior RB Justin Winters (796 yards, 13 TDs), who power an offense that averages 278.1 rushing yards per game.
For Hartley, senior RB Noah Key has gained 2,505 yards and scored 37 touchdowns, but that’s not all. The backfield also boasts fullback Omar Lane, who has gained more than 600 yards.
It’s a change of extremes for Alter, which last week faced Kenton and its unusual passing offense that produced 386 yards by QB Maty Mauk. Now, Alter moves on to Hartley and a nearly rushing-only attack, but the Knights allow an average of just 119.1 rushing yards per game.
“We try not to throw at all,” Burchfield said.
Like his haircut, not too flashy.
