Carroll wins boys state soccer title, 3-2
• The Carroll Patriots are the Division II state champions, beating Richfield Revere 3-2 at Columbus Crew Stadium
• One minute left
• Two minutes remaining
• Another incredble series. Carroll goes up 3-1 as senior Carl Petkoff rips sophomore Vonne Byrd’s cross past the mouth of the goal and into the corner with 5:26 left. …. Revere pulls to 3-2 on Ben Deighton’s penalty kick. … 3:43 left and Carroll leads the D-II state final 3-2.
• 7 minutes remain: Carroll 2, Revere 1
• @ Old Soccer Dude: I’ll get you some official stats after the game or check out www.ohsaa.org. They’ll post the box score after the game. … Nearing the 10-minute mark.
• Carroll leads 2-1 with 21:50 left in the second half.
Carroll senior Justin Chu made it 2-0 on an uncontested header off senior Johan Ritter’s corner kick with 25:15 left. Revere made it 2-1 with 23:23 as headers by Trent Somple then Ryan Zeno found Colin Romisher, who lofted a shot over keeper Steven Foreman who charged out of goal to try and make the sliding stop.
• Carroll header barely wide with 27:54 left. Revere misses off a corner kick high from about 7 yards in front of goal.
• 30 minutes left. Revere trying to put some pressure on Carroll, but the Patriots’ defense has responded.
• @ Mr. Editor dude: The Patriots are 30 minutes away from their second state title in three seasons and third overall.
• 39:29 … Revere’s Coleman dribbles down the right side, turns the corner and fires wide. Carroll keeper Steven Foreman is playing in a shadow so the sun is no longer a factor.
• Halftime at Columbus Crew Stadium. Carroll is 40 minutes away from its third state title and first since 2008. The Patriots lead 1-0 on Zach Zwiesler’s goal off senior Kyle Johnson’s assist. … Carroll let out a collective sigh with 2:20 left in the half when Revere’s Dylan Coleman had a goal erased for offsides. No controversy on the call.
@CarrollGrad … Sorry, there doesn’t appear to be a webcast for the D-II final. Centerville’s D-I final will be carried by the St. Ignatius site. Checked with Carroll’s AD and he didn’t know of a webcast, either.
Carroll leads 1-0 on sophomore Zach Zwiesler’s goal with 15:23 left in the first half.
Zwiesler dribbled down the left side, had a harmless pass deflected by a Revere defender right to Carroll senior Kyle Johnson. Johnson collected the ball near the top of the box, split a pair of Revere defenders with a pass back to Zwiesler, who dribbled left and right-footed it past Revere keeper Brandon Holvey.
@ Old Soccer Dude: Nice crowd for both sides. Revere may have a few more fans, but not by much. I’d count them but the press box faces directly at the sun. Revere’s keeper has been fighting that nasty glare, too.
We’re 10 minutes into the D-II state final and both teams appear evenly matched. Play has been mostly around midfield. Carroll had a corner kick in the opening minutes but didn’t threaten. Revere had a shot five minutes into the game when Carroll keeper Steven Foreman came out of goal to challenge and had the shot deflect off his hands. A Carroll defender used a foot save to deflect the ball away from goal.
Player introductions taking place on field. Here are the Carroll starters:
Steven Foreman, K, senior
Justin Mitchell, F/M, senior
Justin Chu, M/F, senior

The start of the high school boys Division II state championship soccer game between the Carroll Patriots (18-2-2) and the Richfield Revere Minutemen (20-2-0) is about 20 minutes away. A few pre-game notes from Columbus Crew Stadium:
• Carroll coach Scott Molfenter was named private/parochial coach of the year (all divisions) by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association today.
• Also honored was Carroll girls coach Becky Rogers, named co-assistant coach of the year in D-I.
• This is Carroll’s seventh appearance at state. The Patriots won state titles in 2008 (their last appearance) and 1980.
• The Richfield Revere Mintemen make their third state appearance and finished as runners-up in 1995.
• Centerville plays in the D-I state final at 7 p.m. The Dayton area has not won two boys state titles in the same season since Northmont and Alter did it in 1988.
• Alter is tied with Columbus St. Francis DeSales and North Olmsted for the state lead with four championships. Northmont (1988, 1978), Springfield Catholic Central (2007, 2001), Centerville (1984), Chaminade Julienne (1982) and Greeneview (2005) also have state championships.

Um, Greg …. Carroll is 40 minutes away from its third state title and first since 2008. Um, there is only one year between 2008 and 2010. Now if they hadn’t won one in maybe 8 or 9 years you could have said “first since …” But maybe you should have said second in three years.
