Gilbert’s 239 yards help Trotwood upset Winton Woods
SHARONVILLE — Trotwood-Madison got 239 yards and four touchdowns from running back Antwan Gilbert to upset fifth-ranked Winton Woods, the defending state champion, 42-23 in a Division II, Region 8 semifinal on Friday at Princeton High School.
Trotwood (10-2), which has won seven straight, will play 10th-ranked Kings (11-1) in the regional final at 7:30 p.m. next Friday. The site will be announced Sunday by the OHSAA.
2:40, fourth: I need to head down to the field for interviews, but Trotwood looks comfortably ahead and close to beating the state’s No. 4 team, still leading Winton Woods 42-23.
3:05, fourth: Trotwood DB Renon Lorenzo took a reverse 30 yards for a score to put the Rams up 42-23, very close to their second straight regional championship game appearance
6:50, fourth: Trotwood stopped Winton Woods on downs and takes over at its own 42-yard line, still leading 35-23.
10:13, fourth: Trotwood WR Auston Smith caught a pass from QB Marcus Graham just behind a defender, turned and ran for a 24-yard touchdown to increase Trotwood’s lead to 35-23. The teams have scored on all four of their combined possessions in the second half.
11:40, fourth: Winton Woods QB Thomas Owens scored from 1 yard for his second touchdown but a two-point conversion try failed. Trotwood leads 28-23.
End third: Trotwood leads Winton Woods 28-17. Winton Woods will have third-and-12 at the Trotwood 17-yard line when the fourth quarter begins.
3:54, third: Trotwood responded to a Winton Woods score with a 71-yard touchdown drive aided by two Winton Woods pass interference penalties to increase its lead to 28-17 with a 3-yard score by RB Antwan Gilbert, his fourth of the game.
6:56, third: Winton Woods RB Aaron Kemper capped a 78-yard drive with a 3-yard TD run on third down to pull Winton Woods within 21-17. The drive took 5:04 behind Winton Woods’ powerful option rushing offense.
Halftime: Trotwood leads Winton Woods 21-10. RB Antwan Gilbert has 156 yards on 18 carries with TD runs of 7, 20 and 52 yards.
50 seconds, second: Winton Woods kicker Robbie Lewis booted a 22-yard field goal to pull Winton Woods within 21-10. Winton Woods had a first-and-goal at the Trotwood 5-yard line, but the Trotwood defense held strong.
2:44, second: Trotwood RB Antwan Gilbert broke through the left side of the line, changed direction three times and rushed for a 52-yard score to give the Rams a 21-7 lead. Gilbert has rushed 16 times for 152 yards and three TDs.
6:41, second: Trotwood RB Antwan Gilbret broke two tackles at the line of scrimmage and ran 20 yards for a score and a 14-7 Trotwood lead. QB Marcus Graham helped the drive with a 12-yard scramble on an earlier third-and-8.
8:42, second: Winton Woods used rushing plays of 37 and 27 yards to set up a 10-yard scoring run by QB Thomas Owens to tie Trotwood 7-7.
End first: Trotwood still holds a 7-0 lead. Winton Woods will have third-and-6 on its own 24-yard line after stopping a long Trotwood drive on a failed fourth-down conversation. Trotwood RB Antwan Gilbert has rushed for 65 yards on 11 carries with a 7-yard score.
10:20, first: Trotwood RB Antwan Gilbert finished four consecutive running plays with a 6-yard TD run to give the Rams a 7-0 lead. The game’s first play was a 27-yard pass from Marcus Graham to A.J. Jordan
PREGAME: The last time the Trotwood-Madison High School played at Princeton High School, it pounded the state’s No 2-ranked team, Turpin, 43-7 in a regional semifinal last season.
Trotwood is back at the same level of the playoffs in the same stadium, and there’s history with this opponent, too. Trotwood will take on Winton Woods in a Division II, Region 8 semifinal at 7:30 p.m., and the Rams will try to upset the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season.
On its way to the state championship, Winton Woods beat Trotwood 28-7 (the closest any got to Winton Woods in the playoffs) in the regional final. Winton Woods is again strong, having won 10 straight, but Trotwood is on its own winning streak of six games.

TweetVeteran Wayne coach sees similarities with ‘99 Warriors
HUBER HEIGHTS - Longtime Wayne assistant football coach Mike Garringer has seen a lot of great players and teams. And he likes what he sees in this year’s team.
“I compare this team to the ‘99 team,” said Garringer, a football coach at Wayne since ‘69 and the Warriors former wrestling coach.
The Warriors suffered a 35-14 late-season loss to unbeaten Centerville that year, recovered and were D-I state runners-up, falling 24-10 to Cleveland St. Ignatius in the state final.
The Elks were knocked out of the 1999 postseason 49-42 by Cincinnati Elder in a regional semifinal.
“It took the loss to Centerville that year to rejuvenate us,” recalled Garringer, a defensive line coach. “And it carried us on into the playoffs and to the state championship.
“This team has been built the same way, although the momentum has been building from the beginning of the season to the end as opposed to where we hit a plateau in the middle of ’99 and a loss motivated us.”
In 2005 Wayne and Centerville also played twice. The Warriors posted a convincing 38-0 regular-season victory. In the regional semifinal Wayne overcame an 18-point deficit to win 29-28 at Paul Brown Stadium.
Wayne (8-3) plays Centerville (9-2) in a D-I, Region 4 semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday at Welcome Stadium.

TweetCarroll wins boys state soccer title, 3-2
• The Carroll Patriots are the Division II state champions, beating Richfield Revere 3-2 at Columbus Crew Stadium
• One minute left
• Two minutes remaining
• Another incredble series. Carroll goes up 3-1 as senior Carl Petkoff rips sophomore Vonne Byrd’s cross past the mouth of the goal and into the corner with 5:26 left. …. Revere pulls to 3-2 on Ben Deighton’s penalty kick. … 3:43 left and Carroll leads the D-II state final 3-2.
• 7 minutes remain: Carroll 2, Revere 1
• @ Old Soccer Dude: I’ll get you some official stats after the game or check out www.ohsaa.org. They’ll post the box score after the game. … Nearing the 10-minute mark.
• Carroll leads 2-1 with 21:50 left in the second half.
Carroll senior Justin Chu made it 2-0 on an uncontested header off senior Johan Ritter’s corner kick with 25:15 left. Revere made it 2-1 with 23:23 as headers by Trent Somple then Ryan Zeno found Colin Romisher, who lofted a shot over keeper Steven Foreman who charged out of goal to try and make the sliding stop.
• Carroll header barely wide with 27:54 left. Revere misses off a corner kick high from about 7 yards in front of goal.
• 30 minutes left. Revere trying to put some pressure on Carroll, but the Patriots’ defense has responded.
• @ Mr. Editor dude: The Patriots are 30 minutes away from their second state title in three seasons and third overall.
• 39:29 … Revere’s Coleman dribbles down the right side, turns the corner and fires wide. Carroll keeper Steven Foreman is playing in a shadow so the sun is no longer a factor.
• Halftime at Columbus Crew Stadium. Carroll is 40 minutes away from its third state title and first since 2008. The Patriots lead 1-0 on Zach Zwiesler’s goal off senior Kyle Johnson’s assist. … Carroll let out a collective sigh with 2:20 left in the half when Revere’s Dylan Coleman had a goal erased for offsides. No controversy on the call.
@CarrollGrad … Sorry, there doesn’t appear to be a webcast for the D-II final. Centerville’s D-I final will be carried by the St. Ignatius site. Checked with Carroll’s AD and he didn’t know of a webcast, either.
Carroll leads 1-0 on sophomore Zach Zwiesler’s goal with 15:23 left in the first half.
Zwiesler dribbled down the left side, had a harmless pass deflected by a Revere defender right to Carroll senior Kyle Johnson. Johnson collected the ball near the top of the box, split a pair of Revere defenders with a pass back to Zwiesler, who dribbled left and right-footed it past Revere keeper Brandon Holvey.
@ Old Soccer Dude: Nice crowd for both sides. Revere may have a few more fans, but not by much. I’d count them but the press box faces directly at the sun. Revere’s keeper has been fighting that nasty glare, too.
We’re 10 minutes into the D-II state final and both teams appear evenly matched. Play has been mostly around midfield. Carroll had a corner kick in the opening minutes but didn’t threaten. Revere had a shot five minutes into the game when Carroll keeper Steven Foreman came out of goal to challenge and had the shot deflect off his hands. A Carroll defender used a foot save to deflect the ball away from goal.
Player introductions taking place on field. Here are the Carroll starters:
Steven Foreman, K, senior
Justin Mitchell, F/M, senior
Justin Chu, M/F, senior
Jordan Laurin, D/M, senior
Jonah Ritter, M/F, senior
Matthew Barnes, M/F, junior
Kyle Johnson, F/M, senior
Carl Petkoff, F/M, senior
Nicholas Braun, D/M, junior
Zach Zwiesler, M/F, sophomore
Brennan Gross, D/M, senior
The start of the high school boys Division II state championship soccer game between the Carroll Patriots (18-2-2) and the Richfield Revere Minutemen (20-2-0) is about 20 minutes away. A few pre-game notes from Columbus Crew Stadium:
• Carroll coach Scott Molfenter was named private/parochial coach of the year (all divisions) by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association today.
• Also honored was Carroll girls coach Becky Rogers, named co-assistant coach of the year in D-I.
• This is Carroll’s seventh appearance at state. The Patriots won state titles in 2008 (their last appearance) and 1980.
• The Richfield Revere Mintemen make their third state appearance and finished as runners-up in 1995.
• Centerville plays in the D-I state final at 7 p.m. The Dayton area has not won two boys state titles in the same season since Northmont and Alter did it in 1988.
• Alter is tied with Columbus St. Francis DeSales and North Olmsted for the state lead with four championships. Northmont (1988, 1978), Springfield Catholic Central (2007, 2001), Centerville (1984), Chaminade Julienne (1982) and Greeneview (2005) also have state championships.

TweetWelcome Stadium parking to be maxed out with UD, Wayne/Centerville games
If you’re planning on attending Saturday’s Centerville vs. Wayne high school football game at Welcome Stadium, be advised that parking probably won’t be available until after 4:30 p.m.
The University of Dayton opens its men’s basketball season at 2 p.m. on Saturday vs. visiting Mount Saint Marys. Flyers games usually last about two hours and parking fills the stadium’s lots.
Game director Jonas Smith, the City League athletic director, said football fans shouldn’t try to enter Welcome Stadium’s lots before 4:30 p.m. The gates for stadium entrance will open at 5:30 p.m.
This is the third straight year that UD’s season opener has coincided with a football game that evening at Welcome Stadium. However, the Elks and Warriors are expected to draw a capacity crowd.
The schools combined to sell about 5,000 total pregame tickets. The stadium can seat 10,000 and several more thousand can be accommodated by standing around the track.
Walk-up ticket sales are $9 and parking $2.
“We’ll accommodate as many people as want to see this game,” said Smith.
